Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Time outs just make my DS worse... What should I do?

My DS is 14 months, His tantrums are getting worse I don't know if its to soon to start doing time outs.. I try putting him in our hallway with all the doors closed and baby gate up for only 1 minute but he flips out more and when I take him out he hits, bites, continues to scream and yell.

(My first child and I feel helpless)

Re: Time outs just make my DS worse... What should I do?

  • I personally think he is way too young. My 21 month old doesn't even understand time outs really. I think at that age all you can do is baby proof, redirect, and remove them from situations. I don't think they do anything worthy of being disciplined and it is all about teaching them the right way to behave. They are learning and don't know how to communicate what they want. For physical offensives I grab my LO's hands and say "no hitting, show me gentle." We taught him to rub our arms. If he continues to hit I remove myself from reach and ignore him. Good luck!

ours are about the same age... no way mine are ready for time-outs.

i might start at 18mos (90sec), but won't really expect them to "get it".

just started reading "happiest toddler on the block".  know a couple people using his techniques who like it.
