What is an unneeded "y" in a name?

So is a "y" in Myles an unneeded "y"?

 

Just wondering. We spelt Myles with a "y" because Miles, IMO, is a word. I always thought Myles as a name was spelt like that and not Miles until I started reading more into names.

I would say yes but only because all the "Miles" I've known were spelled with i's- but I see your point!

I would think as a general rule, an un-needed "y" in a name is one that makes you have to spell out the name when you tell people the name because they will think it is with an "i". Just my 2 cents.

ya more like this!!! Myles sounds right to me and reminds me of Myles Davis. Myles' y sounds like a y sound so IMO it's more appropriate. Taking Addison and making it ADDYson (add-dee-son IMO) or Addisyn (add-is-sin I guess??) sounds and looks goofy.  Like pp said Nycole is just pretty silly. Taking a name that is "popular" and putting a Y in it to be "different" is what my siggy is referring to.

bu then again, this is coming from someone who's middle name is Kaetlin so that they could shorten it and I could be a double-namer. (I was Laura Kae until I graduated from college and decided that made me sound like I was 5).

Our DD's name is Camryn. 

We went with this spelling vs 'Cameron' because we thought -eron was the more masculine spelling and we wanted people to see her name on paper and know she was a she.

Now I think that is definitely an unneeded y! That would annoy the pyss out of me.

Our DD's name is going to be Kathryn because it is my Great Grandmother's name. I definitely believe in the case of family names, LO will not have an "unnecessary Y" in her name.

I know a boy named Hyyt pronounced /HI-et/, ya know, like the hotels? His uncle always jokes that he's going to buy Hyyt a vowel for his birthday, christmas, etc.

You get the gist of it.  It seems like the y is there for no reason other than mom likes to write the letter y because you can make it curly or put a heart or a swirley at the bottom of the "monkey tail."

I actually can't recall ever seeing a different spelling than that for Kathryn.  Well, except Katharine, which is really kinda annoying to pronounce correctly.  Considering the spelling you chose is how you usually pronounce that, I see no problem.

We chose the spelling of Madelyn because of the pronunciation issue too.  We wanted Mad-a-lin instead of Mad-a-line (Madeleine).

We named our 1st DD Riley. EVERYONE that needs to spell her name wants to automatically spell it Rylee because of her being a girl and the whole "y" movement. Our method didn't work.

What I really don't understand is our 2nd DD is named Gracie, and almost EVERYONE needs me to spell it out for them... seriously? How else would you spell it other than the first obvious choice?

BTW- I think Myles is completely addorable and that's how I would have spelled it too.

It's like people CRAVE the extra Y.  My daughter's name is Emerson.  Spelled just like the author, the electric company, like... well like Emerson.  Do you know how many congrats cards I got when she was born to Emyrson?  How I have to constantly tell people how to spell her name and people say, "no Y in it?"  Seriously folks, did you NOT take English Lit in high school?

But then we also regularly get Emmerson and Emmersonne.  People also like the double consonant, it makes them happy somehow.

The little boy down the street, his name is Aydenn.  For two years I have been spelling it Aidan.  That's what it sounds like.  Then I saw his mom wrote his name in chalk on the street when they were playing.  Oh, unnecessary Y AND the double consonant.  My bad.

I think a unneeded "y" would be something more like - if I spelled my own name Jennyfer.

And while I would instinctively spell Miles with an i, I don't think that the y spelling of it qualifies as an unnecessary Y name. I don't see it and roll my eyes which is how I personally judge it!

We went with the traditional spelling for DD...Catherine. We knew going into it that we'd have to spell it because there are so many versions. But I"m shocked at how almost everyone defaults to "Kathryn." Its amazing.

I always think that Myles is the traditonal way to spell it, like Myles Standish b 1584.  Miles looks wrong to me.
