I do think that it is declining in popularity and may end up with a "dated" 70s/80s/90s feel.
It IS similar to your name in that both names contain the same letters. But the sound is different enough to avoid confusion. I doubt most people will think you were attempting to name him after yourself.
Oh, and I like the name Kyle a lot. I'm considering it as a mn if this little one is a boy.
My name is Kelly & my son is Kyle. Never any confusion with us. I am a teacher & have had 4 Kyles in 8 years...of course all after I had my son! Good thing they were all good kids.
