Baby Names

Hi! Name Help, please!

My husband and I are thinking of naming this baby Avonlea, pronounced ah-von-LEE. It's from Anne of Green Gables/Anne of Avonlea, which was my favorite book when I was a kid, but when we told his family the other night, they all hated it. We love it. Is it that bad? Should we change it?

We're thinking of Avonlea Grace, after hubby's mom or Avonlea Margaret, after my mother.

Re: Hi! Name Help, please!

  • It sounds pretty... I just despise it as a name. Sorry. It just does not sound right on a person to me.

However, if you do decide to go for it, Avonlea Grace sounds the best.

  • I love the idea of using names from favorite books, and I don't mind the idea of names that are actually places.  And as PP said, Avonlea is a pretty word in general, but I don't know that it works as a person's name.  Are there any other names you like from that series?

  • Avonlea is pretty, but I agree with pps and don't think it's good as a person's name.  Why not name her Anne?

  • I hear a slurred version of "heavenly," instead of Avonlea. I'm usually all for spelling integrity, but I would at least change the ending to -lee, if nothing else. Otherwise, I think it might be mispronounced. I'm not sure that the reference to Anne of Green Gables will be inherently known these days; most people might need help with pronunciation.
  • I love Anne of Green Gables as much as the next person, but I think this might be taking a place name a touch far. Granted, I like it better than Dallas or Paris, but I keep seeing AVON. I do see the appeal - sounds close to the word, heavenly, has a story behind it, has the popular LEY-sounding ending. I would use it as a middle name though.

  • Aww, you guys aren't telling me what I want to hear! I guess it's probably back to the drawing board.
  • I think it's a pretty word, but I don't know if it will really work as a fn. I would just use Anne if you want a name from the book.

  • I actually LOVE Avonlea...I think it's a beautiful name and it's really special that you would be using it from your favorite book.

I vote Yes for Avonlea Grace.

I think if you and your hubby like it, so what what everyone else thinks!
