Modified Bed Rest Question

Hi,

I'm a long-time lurker here, pregnant with BG twins.

I had a routine appointment this afternoon, and out of the blue my OB today (highest recommended Dr in the group) said that at this point I should be starting modified bed-rest and only working 9-1. I knew this would be coming, but it just seemed so early to me, especially since I have no symptoms aside from some RLP and hand and foot swelling. He checked my cervix and it's still closed and long/thick (I can't remember the exact terminology Embarrassed), as of the last ultrasound, both babies are right on track, and none of the OB's had so much as mentioned any restrictions until today. I guess I am just wondering if this is normal for someone having no complications at 25 weeks along with twins.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Modified Bed Rest Question

  • honestly, I have no clue but I am interested to see responses.

originally when I went to the OB, he said 24 weeks I would be taken out of work. Now that I am out that point and everything is fine he says to keep working, not sure for how much longer.

I wish I would be on modified rest, I swear sitting at a desk all day is torture. I think I am most uncomfortable sitting.

  • Some OBs are just more conservative w/ that than others. Mine definitely was glad that I happened to be done with work for summer around 24 weeks (and then had some preterm labor symptoms at 26 weeks so that was the end of that for me) and told me in the beginning that he does recommend modified bed rest/light activity or duty around that time for multiples anyway. If it is not possible for you, I'm sure he'd understand, maybe you could make some sort of concession or compromise too. Everyone on here will give you a different answer b/c every OB practices differently & of course there are many women who never go on bedrest & work up until they deliver, etc.

Even if someone on here states it like it is a 'rule', just know that all drs were trained differently & practice based on their training & experience, there are not that many 'rules' when it comes to this (pet peeve of mine on here obviously LOL ). you have to trust your OB and talk to him about why he recommends that & how it will work for you. • I would say talk to your OB also.  I don't see the point of bed rest if you aren't having complications, but I'm not a doc.  I am at 33 weeks, and even though I'm not working due to a recent move, my OB hasn't even mentioned bed rest. The only thing he said about modified activity is to put my feet up about every hour to help with the cartoonish swelling I have going.  So I think it is just a preference for the specific doc.  Let him know your situation and how you feel and the two of you can take it from there.  Good Luck Mama!

  • Thanks so much for your responses. I'm sure my work will accommodate this. I may be able to work from home the rest of the day, but it was just such a shock for a compulsive planner/control freak like me. Smile

I feel like I should be happy about it, but since this week I will be telling them for sure that I won't be able to come back once the twins are born,  (and hopefully they will lay me off, so I have time to eventually find something to do at night instead) this news makes it that much harder. My worry is that they will just lay me off right now, because it would screw up my insurance in a major way (DH's insurance is mega expensive, so we were trying to hold off on switching to his until after I gave birth). Anyway it was all I could do not to break down right there in the office, when all the while I was thinking "Shouldn't this be a good thing?" Crazy right? But ultimately I want to do what's best for the LOs, so if he wants me to tone it down a little I will. It was just nice to hear that this is pretty "standard" and not excessively early like I had thought.

    Thanks again!!
