Should I try to conceive now while I'm a little younger or should I try to lose the weight (this will take at least a year) before I start ttc?
I know that age and weight are both risk factors, but, I don't know which is worse. We hope to have 2 children, so, the time factor would be not only now, but for 2 children.
(my BMI is 44.3)
Re: 34 and obese
I'm in the same boat as you, but I am 37. Obviously, losing weight is best for all of us that are overweight, but according to my RE only factors into infertility about 10% of the time. If you have normal periods, then it may not be a factor.
I think really, it is a personal choice. You know best what your body can handle. But you really need to be honest with yourself. If you say you will lose the weight, will you? We all say we will and most of us are still overweight.
Talk to your doctor and see what they say. If everything is ok, no harm in having a little fun trying to get pregnant while you are losing weight in a healthy way.
Personally, I couldn't imagine losing the weight only to gain it back with pregnancy. If I can get pregnant now, then I will. But I am looking into stroller fit classes for after the baby is born. : )
I worry about that myself. I meant to lose weight over the past year, but I didn't. There are a LOT of issues involved with my weight and I don't know if I can work them all out in the short run.
I will want what's best for my baby, of course, and since weight and age are BOTH risk factors, it's a tough call.
I also fear the effects that the add'l weight of a pregnancy will have on my body if I don't lose the weight.
Thanks to both of you!
I just wanted to throw out there that I have been doing the P90X program and it has literally changed my life. My husband and I started it to lose weight and get healthier for TTC. It will not take you a year to lose weight if you start this program. It is very intense but so worth it. They have two different versions. One is called Classic and one is Lean. The Lean is easier and I would start with that program first. The nutrition part is necessary to lose the most weight. My husband lost 20 pounds in 35 days and I lost 10 lbs in 35 days. You might ask your doctor about it. Our doctor actually advised us to start this program. Hope this helps. GL
I also struggle with TTC and weight loss. I agree that not only is this a personal choice, but one you should talk about with you dr.. I know 2 people who are obese and had no problems conceiving and had a healthy pregnancy/delivery/baby (although there's no guarantee). And there's no reason you can't do both, lose weight and TTC, and the same time.......there's no way of knowing how long it will take to conceive, so you may end up losing the weight before you get pregnant anyway. Or, you could wait until you lost, say, half the weight and reevaluate the situation at that time. Only you can decide what you're comfortable with. Talk to your dr. though, especially if current/future medical issues are a concern.
Good luck!
You should definitely consult with your doctor and weigh the pros and cons with waiting or or going forward while still being overweight. Additionally, I just also wanted to bring to your attention an added issue to think about. A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that our adult body weight and metabolism may be determined by the environment in utero. So, unfortunately, a child may have lifetime metabolic consequences from having been exposed to an obese environment in the womb.
Here are some of the things I have read related to this topic:

I'd definitely talk to your doctor about this - I too am 34 and obese, but I have been struggling to lose weight for more than 5 years. I lost almost 50lbs over the course of a year 4 years ago, and I've kept that off, but my weight doesn't seem to want to go down from there. My doctor has said as long as I'm exercising, eating well, and my blood work comes back as normal, she's not worried about my being pregnant and obese. But she also knows how hard I've been working to lose this weight...
Good luck with TTC.

Thanks! I have Implanon currently and will be getting it removed soon (it's expiring) and we're trying to decide whether or not to get another BC at that time. I've already done a pre-conception checkup and discussed some things with my doctor. She said it would be good for me to lose some weight if I can but didn't seem to think that it's a huge factor. The biggest fuss she made was actually that since we just got married we should "enjoy each other for a while" before we ttc. She was 40 when she had her first child, so, she sees no problems with the age factor either. My mother, on the other hand, started with pre-menopausal symptoms in her early 40's.
My appt is on August 11 to have the Implanon removed. That gives us time to think about it and decide from there.
