Tylenol cold confusion

I have a cold and I'm miserable. I emailed my doc and she told me to take either Tylenol Cold or Robitussin, but when I went to Walgreens to get Tylenol Cold, there were so many versions I had to ask the pharmacist to help. She told me NOT to take Tylenol Cold while pregnant. What??

I'm going to call my doc on Monday, but I'm just curious if anyone has taken Tylenol Cold and if so, what kind, since there's Multi Sympton, Severe, blah blah blah.

Re: Tylenol cold confusion

  • My OB said I could take any type of tylenol.....so you should be fine and she also said robitussin fine as well. Hope that helps :) Hope you feel better soon.

  • I know most people would say trust your doctor over a pharmacist, but honestly, I'd take into consideration what the pharmacist said too. I once had a doctor prescribe me something only to find out from the pharmacist that I REALLY shouldn't take it, and the doctor made a mistake. I always ask the doctor and double check with the pharmacist.
  • I thought all tylenol products were ok...
  • The confusing thing about the Tylenol Cold products is each variety (multi symptom, severe, etc) has different drugs in it besides Tylenol so it's confusing.
  • I was told by my OB and the CVS pharmacist that I could take Robitussin but NOT Robitussin DM (DM = dextromethorphan). I also looked at all of the Tylenol Cold products and it seemed like they all said that they contained the DM. Also, my mother is a RN and she said that the DM is a decongestant and will increase the baby's heartrate which is a big no no.
  • Regular tylenol cold is okay along with regular robitussin.  No DM, no multi syptoms, no severe...etc....

  • Well, I called my doc's nurse line and she suggested regular Robitussin for the cough, and regular Sudafed for the nasal congestion. I'll do that to be safe and just ask my doc to clarify. Thanks to everyone.
  • DM is not a decongestant, it's a cough suppressant.

And to those who say any tylenol product is ok...Tylenol is a brand name for acetaminophen, but they also market all sorts of combinations of drugs under Tylenol (Cold, Flu, Sinus, etc.).  When your doctor says Tylenol is OK, they just mean products containing acetaminophen only.  "Tylenol something" means acetaminophen is in the product (with or without other drugs that may or may not be safe).  Tylenol products do not necessarily mean safe.  Ask your pharmacist!!

  • You need to be clear on what is in the Tylenol Cold you want to take and then check with your Dr. on specific ingredients.  There are many cold ingredients, and just because they are with Tylenol doens't make them OK.  There are new cold formulations coming out every year, and ohters are discontinued.  Your Dr. is likely not up on the specific formulations, in which case he may be OK with ANY of the OTC ingredients and that is why he didn't get specific.  Tylenol can also be combined with:

    Pseudoephedrine - a nasal decongestant

    Phenylephrine - a nasal decongestant

    Guaifenasin - an Expectorant

    Dextromethorphan - a cough suppressant

    Doxylamine or dyphenhydramine - antihistamines
