3rd Trimester

New to 3rd tri & C-Section question

Hi ladies, first I would like to say I am so excited to be here! I can not wait for these little pumpkins to arrive, but my question-concern is about a c section, I was told something about gas? I know when I had my gallbladder removed they used gas or something but the pain was HORRENDOUS, I have never been in so much pain in all my life as I was then so now I am terrified that that is what I am going to go through again. Also I was told that because I am anemic & and lost so much blood with both my vaginal deliveries that I will probably this time as well. People have me terrified lol any advice ladies?

Re: New to 3rd tri & C-Section question

  • Welcome to third tri, the longest waiting time of your life lol....I have had a CS and I had little to no pain, I didn't even take tylenol after. Soreness yes but pain No. Who told you about the bleeding? I would think that your doc will be prepared for any bleeding, and they can minimize it during your CS. I never had gas for my section only the oxygen, I had the gas with my first vag delivery...yuck! I am doing another CS and I have no fear of it. GL

  • Could they have been talking about where the nurses and drs are waiting for your to pass gas?

I didn't have a c-section but I vaguely remember something being mentioned in the classes about needing to pass gas after a C-section for some reason medically speaking.

  • I'm not really sure to be honest, something about air getting trapped and it causes gas to release up through your shoulders or something? I know when I had my gallbladder removed they used gas to bloat my stomach & when it released it was the worlds worst pain I have EVER had. So I am not sure I am going to ask my OB on Mon
  • You totally brought back memories for me. I had shoulder pain. They told me it was trapped gas. It wasn't insanly painful just annoying and I was concerned about what could be causing it before I asked. C section wasn't that bad. I was sore but only took Tylenol post op. Good luck!
  • I have had my gallbladder removed and had a csection and the pain in the shoulders (from the gas) was horrible with my gallbladder.  I didn't feel anything in my shoulders from the csection.

I don't have advice about anemia.... but as far as comparing c-section vs. gallbladder surgery - I found that the gallbladder surgery was MUCH more painful and difficult (at least for me) to recover from! I don't think they will fill you with gas? That doesn't make sense to me? It was explained to me when I had my gallbladder surgery, that they fill your abdominal cavity with air to puff it up so they can put the laprascope in more easily. that's not the case with a c-section. Hth!

  • I don't know about the c-section, but as far as anemia goes, I've been told that if I continue to be anemic, it can prolong labor.  My doctor also said not that you lose more blood but that it takes longer to rebuild your blood supply so you'll be tired longer and weaker longer, which is hard with a new baby.  Is your doctor working with you to try to fix the anemia?  My doctor gave me lots of tips and also put me on two iron supplements a day on top of my prenatal vitamin (I take iron in the morning, afternoon, and prenatal with iron at night).  Try not to combine iron and calcium because the calcium will prevent the iron from being absorbed.  Try to take the iron with vitamin C because it helps you to absorb the iron.  The extra iron will make you constipated so make sure you get lots of fiber.  Good luck!
  • ...Gas, I honestly don't remember anything mentioned about gas when I had my c-section. I know that my first B-movement was what my DR's were waiting for before I could get released.

I had a positive experience with my c-section(healing wise). The girl that shared the room with me didn't. She didn't follow the Fiber diet we were put on and ate McD's after and she was in so much pain that night.

  • Referred shoulder pain.  It's basically pain from trapped air.  I had it after my c/s and yeah, it was pretty painful.  I would wager it's the same thing you felt after your gallbladder surgery, but I don't think having that type of pain once predisposes it to you after another surgery, KWIM?  My nurses told me to move as much as possible - apparently being upright moves the air up, so the more you're up and mobile the faster it gets out.
