hahaha...holy crap...I didn't even notice that there wasn't an "r" in "bet".
I say sherbert.
Is it a French word...pronounced "sher-bay"?
Dictionary.com says it's pronounced "shur-bit" and comes from Ottoman Turkey. It's also the word for a British drink made of fruit juice. The word "sherbert" is an Australian word for an alcoholic beverage, especially beer.
I don't know why Americans call it "sherbert," though. Easier to say?

Funny, you should ask. I say Sherbert, and honestly had no idea it was spelled sherbet. I do weight watchers and I was getting so angry because it kept telling me there was no such thing as sherbert. So I googled it and of course it corrected my spelling.

I say sherbert, too. I realized a while back (when I started buying my own groceries) that it didn't have that second r. So I tried saying sherbet, but felt like a goof. So, even though it's wrong, I still say sherbert.

Tons of people say "sherbert." I don't know why. I've always wondered how the extra "r" got thrown in there.
I used to work at Baskin Robbins and it always puzzled me.
Hmmm...?
We should call into A Way With Words on NPR. I love that show!
