Pregnant after IF

Failed the 3 hour...

I'm really bummed but not all that surprised since I have PCOS and figured I was at higher risk.  They said I didn't even pass the fasting test and failed 3 out of the four tests.

I'm waiting on a dietitian to call me and set up an appointment.  I asked if I needed to do anything different in the meantime and they said not really just to wait for her to call.  Anybody with GD or know about it have advice on how to eat until I meet with the dietitian?

  • Ugh.  That stinks.  I don't have any advice or knowledge about this.  Hopefully the dietitian will call soon and you can meet with him/her to find out what to do.

  • I had GD and it isn't quite that bad. I went to a nutrion class for women with GD and learned a lot. You will be put onto a diet that involves watching your carb intake. 15g of carbs = 1 carb serving. You will have 3-4 carb servings allowed per meal depeding on how your diet is structured. You will also have to watch your proteins and have so many protein servings allowed per meal. I had to check my blood sugar 4 times a day (first thing in the morning and 2 hours after each meal). You will quickly learn what carbs make your blood sugar go up and which ones don't. (for me, cereal was a bad carb. I could eat exactly 1 serving and it would still raise my blood sugar). I recommend going over to the high risk pregnancy board. Lots of GD moms over there to help you out.

  • i have it. both pregnancies. make sure you talk to a dietician AND  AND AND you are referred to a PERI/MFM.  I'm saying AND a bunch of times because that should be a no-brainer/standard, but sometimes it is NOT.

You need NST (non stress tests at 36wks on) or definitely (bio physical profiles with a MFM - u/s.).  I insist on both.  If you have to be on insulin, you need these at 32wks or so.  I was not on insulin either time.

I would start eating better now.  No fruit juice - or juice or any kind.  no sugar in drinks.  I drink iced tea no sugar or water, that's it.  No fruit in the morning.  I can't eat fruit at all, but I can eat some dark chocolate.  Some ppl tolerate other things.

Be prepared that you might have to do insulin because I know my dietician said people who have failed fasting usually have to do that (BUT NOT always).  I've always passed fasting.

smaller meals and snacks are needed.

my sample breakfast.  one slice of bread with PB OR one slice of bread with ham OR one slice of bread with cheese.  I would go over with more carbs in two slices.

snack:  cottage cheese with crackers or peanut butter on a graham cracker (only 3 crackers - yes 3 small ones) or nuts and something else.

lunch:  chicken on a salad, or hamburger 1 bun, limit french fries, I eat hot dogs with only one bun - 2 hot dogs.  minimize chips and high carb food (really everything) it is ok to eat carbs as long as you balance with a protein.

snack in afternoon:  same as morning snack.  pimento cheese spread on some crackers.  I can rarely eat fruit but some can do 1/4 an apple in the afternoon - never, ever in the morning.  no bananas in the morning and I can only eat ONE bite.

dinner:  chicken and veggie and slice of bread or salmon etc.

eat something before bed.  PB on graham cracker.

good luck and let me know if you have questions.

  • I'm sorry :(  One of my friends just had a baby and she had GD.  She basically was told to limit sugars and carbs I think.  One good thing about it was it helped with her weight gain lol :)

  • It's not as bad as it seems at first...  I was allowed 45 grams carbs per meal and 30 grams of carbs per snack.  My biggest challenge was getting my snacks in.

  • I'm sorry!  Hopefully you'll get some good info from the dietician.
  • Thanks all!  I'm hoping the dietitian will call tomorrow and I can get in asap. I'm going to also check out the high risk board and check out some of their posts.  I'm hoping I can just regulate it with meals and I won't need the insulin.
