BLW - teething biscuits

So, we've been doing a little BLW (my husband is still leery about certain foods but is ok with giving non-pureed versions of typical baby foods). Anyway, our son does fine with hand to mouth, gnawing on stuff, etc. He clearly doesn't eat a lot of it but it's been good practice. Anyway, he's teething (has 2 bottom ones already) and my mom recommended teething biscuits. Anyway, evidently they don't actually exist in the form she thinks they do these days. The only biscuits I can find that imply they're for teething (as opposed to crackers that will disintegrate instantly when he tries to eat them) say specifically for 12months+. So what do I do? Do I give him the 12+ because it probably says that because they assume I'm feeding purees until then or is there another reason? Can I make my own teething biscuits?

Re: BLW - teething biscuits

  • You know what we loved?  Frozen waffles.  We would break off a piece and give to her.  It would be hard at first and cold which felt great, but would turn to mush so she could gum it and swallow it and not choke.  My mom thought it was disgusting and not a good idea until she saw how much Emerson loved them (and still does).  My pedi suggested it, and a bunch of other friends told me how great frozen waffles were for teething.

  • it isn't pureBLW, but early on, we did frozen peach slices in one of those mesh feeders in place of biscuits.

i've heard frozen bagels too, but mdjune's frozen waffles sound better to me :)

  • I have some Earth's Best Organic Wheat Teething Biscuits.  I let Ophelia have one as a snack/ teether every other day or so.  They are HARD like the old fashioned kind.  the Gerber or whatever kind aren't so hard really, I think that they are odd to be called teething biscuits when they aren't super hard for knawing...

  • BLW = Baby Led Weaning.  Skip purees/cereals and go straight on to hand held, self fed food.  See https://babyledweaning.com/ for a touch of info on it.

  • I found some that are hard, but they said 12 months +. I bought them anyway and tried one yesterday and it was a BIG success! I also love the frozen waffle suggestion, perhaps we will try that as well.
