Minnesota Babies

St Josephs

I am only 5 wks but I want to have a plan so I can be sure my OB delivers there. I have been thinking of St. Josephs in St Paul for when I deliver. Bc they have the waterbirth tubs, and I think they can do C-sections (I dont want one but I want to be prepared). I had my Daughter at St. Johns and it was nice. But call me a little selfish I want DH to feel a little more anxiety on the way there vs a hospital only 4mins from my home. Plus they dont offer the waterbirth tubs.

So my question has anyone delivered, or known someone to deliver or do anything there? Is the staff nice? Its not too confusing to get to is it with the Downtown streets? What was your experience?

Re: St Josephs

  • I had my c/s with dd there and loved it. 98% of the staff was so awesome. Esp my OR nurse, she was calming, told me every step of what they were doing and why, and she got just as excited as me and dh when they pulled dd out : ). I only had 2 kinda icky nurses but honestly it didn't bother me enough to not deliver there again.

If you're familiar with DT St. Paul it's not confusing, but if you don't know the streets very well you might want to drive down there a few times before you deliver.

And I've heard that if you choose to do a waterbirth or med free birth the nurse are very supportive.

  • We were torn between both too!  Few facts we found along the way.

    - Nurses are more experienced at St. Joe's.

    - More Lawsuits at St. Joe's.

    - Smaller Number of Rooms at St. Joe's = More One on One

    - St. John's has a NIC unit.

    - St. Joe's does not have a NIC unit but is closer to Children's.

As for the water birth, this was my main reason too!  Keep in mind that your doctor must be certified and you are required to have a clean transmittable disease test BEFORE you go into labor and documented in your chart.  You must also be low risk and a few other guidelines.  Call and ask.

As for parking and getting around, it's frustrating once IN the hospital.  Nurses told us to just go in via the ER as it's the easiest route.

    Best of Luck!
