Babies: 9 - 12 Months

CIO & Teething

OK, so we have done our own version of CIO mutliple times since Tahlia has been about 5 months old.  Each time we do it though something intereferes with the training and she/we back pedal. For example we were on a good role then DH and I had to move her into our bedroom because of a change in our living situation, then we moved and I wanted her to adjust to the new house before sleep training, most recently it seems that teething is keeping her up in agony in the middle of the night.  We have been going to her and soothing her in whatever way we can but are both getting tired of getting up 3+ times a night. Am I just making excuses for not wanting to do CIO? I have stuck to the method for her naps and they have gotten better.  I just feel bad if she is in pain from her teeth and I am leaving her in there alone to deal with it.

Has anyone else tried to do CIO while LO was teething, any tips??

  • We're in the same situation.  DD was/is teething, so I've been getting her and soothing her when she wakes up crying.  I'm at the point where I don't know if she's still waking up from teething or if we're just getting into a bad habit.

This is EXACTLY the way we feel right now. How can we know for sure??? Ugh!

  • I don't do CIO but one of my coworkers does it. His theory is that if he has given tylenol and orajel and those seem to comfort the child then CIO is okay. I would go with your instinct. There is nothing wrong with giving extra love to your possibly teething baby but it a baby has never died from crying themselves to sleep, either.
