Non-BF, I just do not get FB sometimes

I just saw that one of my BFFs from middle school has 1200+ friends.  Seriously, you know that many people that you want to see pics of your kids and know your corny thoughts?  And I was curious if her brother was on FB but clicked on a different person...4,327 friends?  How do you even know that many people?  I am 35, lived in three states and family/ILs that live out of the country and there is no way I could name 4,327 people, never mind wanting that many people to know anything about me.  I have 109 friends and have been very picky, not accepting all requests and have purged some and want to purge again, I am totally not a paranoid person but see no need for the kid that sat next to me in 3rd grade to know what I did today!

It's an ego boosting thing. 

Now me, I actually will purge my friends list every 6 months or so.  If I have not actually INTERACTED with the person, I let them go (other than family). Most of these people are my highschool and college friends.   

But at the same time, I have increased my list with the new friends I make here in Germany.  Everyone keeps their laptop open throughout the day and we will use that vs the phone. 

I like the ease of being able to contact multiple people at once or just one at a time.

In my profession, I could easily reach that but I don't. I keep facebook pretty personal to close friends and family, but I know a lot of people who use it to promote their work,business, or a cause that easily rack that many friends.

I know I've ticked off a few people at work by ignoring their friend request. Sorry. I like you, but I don't socialize with you outside of work and I don't want you to know my personal business.

I only have about 40 people on my FB, just my close friends and family. I don't feel the need to let everyone in the world know all my personal business. But when my 14 year old SD sent me a friend request and I accepted it, then like 10 of her friends (that I've never met!!!) sent me requests too. Teenagers I get...adults with thousands of friends, I don't get.

Do they play games on FB like Farmville or Mafia Wars?? I have a lot of friends because of the games (I am in the process of purging all those people since I don't have time for games anymore).
