We are naming our daughter Elise and we love the name as it is, but DH is concerned that she'll be given a nickname, like Eli. In our community, Eli is usually a nickname for Elizabeth, very rarely do people use Liz here. I had one student named Elise and everyone called her by her full name. If you know an Elise, was her name shortened with a nn or was she called by her full name?
Re: nn for Elise
One of my sisters is named Elise. No one ever shortened her name until she was an adult and then my husband started calling her "E." He's still the only one to use the nickname, though, and I don't think it's a common abbreviation at all, so I doubt it would happen to your daughter.
I think I should note too, that my sister's name is pronounced with a long "E" sound Eee-lees, rather than the more common Eh-lees.
I've never personally known an Elise, but I don't see any need for a nickname.
If you did want one for her, Ellie would be cute. Is Eli pronounced like the boys name or like Ellie?
If you call your child by a particular name, most people will call her that. There is always the chance your DD will choose to go by a nn as she gets older though.
I have never known an Elise w/ a nickname...I think she can just go by her fully name, especially since it's only 2 syllables.
I have a 4 syllable name and I NEVER go by a nickname - I don't like my options!
I live in a predominantly Hispanic community, so Eli pronounced in Spanish sounds just like Ellie. But, I'm just going to stick to calling her by her full name since it is short and, hopefully, others will, too.
I hope that just had to do with that particular girl's reputation and not the name in general, lol.

I am Elyse and have always been called by my full name. No one has ever tried to call me Eli. My BFF calls me "Else" sometimes, but it's just a play off the fact that I always get called Elsie.
ETA: Nor has anyone ever called me Ellie.
