Personally, I would go with Charles and just use Charlie as a nn. I think it would be nice when the child is an adult to have a more formal option if they choose.

This, exactly.
I really like Charlie as a nn, but I don't care for it as a stand-alone first name.

I know that I am in the minority but I think Charlie is fine as a first name all on it's own.
I feel if you are going to call the baby Charlie all the time anyway, why not just name the baby Charlie. Why use a first name that you will never actually use.
Just my two cents.
ETA: As for the whole give the child the option of a more formal name for when they are older thing.
My step -grandpa is 90 years old and he STILL goes by Charlie. He doesn't like to be called Charles.

It's more about giving the CHILD the option of which name he prefers. Obviously, your step grandpa prefers the more informal. And we go back and forth on what we call our son.. Charles mostly, but Charlie sometimes.

ditto
ditto. that being said, I know people who have nns as actual first names and they are still successful, productive members of society.
Speaking from experience here... most definitely go with Charles over Charlie as a given name. And it is a BOY's name, not a girl's! HA!
Gives the boy the option of being more formal in adulthood. Charlie is cute, but he may not want a cute name when he's grown.
