Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Stupid statistics

For repeat miscarriage the statistic are as follows:

If you have had a miscarriage during your first pregnancy, your chances of another miscarriage are 10-13%.

There is a 40% chance of a repeat miscarriage if you have had two pregnancies and two miscarriages.

If you have had three pregnancies and three miscarriages there is a 60% chance you will miscarry again.  If you have had four miscarriages with no live births your chances of a healthy pregnancy drop to 0-5%.

according to this...my chance of having a successful pregnancy is 60%..and if i miscarry again that drops to 40%..and God forbid i miscarry after that because with a 0-5% chance i might as well not even try...

thanks a lot google Confused

Re: Stupid statistics

  • Google is an evil enemy.  Every now and then it sucks me in too.  Try to stay away from-only bad thought come from there.  Even my doc banned me from googling-haha.

  • Hugs to you. I know stats svck. I didn't have a miscarriage but for us its 5x higher for NTD recurrence when compared to a "normal" woman who never had a NTD baby. Fvck statistics...someone up there has plans for me...even though it svcks right now.

I agree with Lara, you have to ignore this stuff.  It's not like great odds helped any of us so statistics really don't mean anything.  I'm so sorry you are having another loss.

  • Think of it this way, the odds of having even one miscarriage are very small right? And we all fell into that small statistic and had it happen, at least once.

So, just because the statistical odds of you having a healthy pregnancy is lower doesn't mean that you can't, just like the statistics showing you wouldn't be likely to miscarry didn't keep you from miscarrying. You've already proven that you can be on the improbable side of a statistic, don't assume you'll always be on the bad side.

This.  But I also agree that Google s*cks. My searches involved the same topic plus "pregnancy after 35" and the results were similarly depressing.  :)

  • i agree with PPs.  ignore the statistics--they describe averages for groups only, so they tell you NOTHING about how things will go for you.

And now I'm crying... google has too much information. I am going to be a statistic. My doctor won't do any testing until a third loss b/c most insurances won't cover it before. I told him if there is a third there will not be a fourth opportunity. I refuse to allow m/c to be my form of birth control.
