Anyone's DC eat a ton as an infant?

DS2 has been eating 6 oz bottles of EBM every night for the past couple weeks. I tried everything before starting to give him that much- burping, paci, rocking, etc. but he would be inconsolable until he'd get his 6 oz. Last night he had 6 oz at 8 and then two hours later he finished two 2 oz bottles. It's insane and my supply is barely keeping up with him. Anyone else experience anything like this with their babies?

  • Annalise nursed constantly as an infant, but I have no idea how much she was actually taking since I didn't give bottles. She pretty much nursed every 1-1.5 hours during the day and then would go 3-4 hours at night. (This was probably around the 1 month mark.) She did cluster feed in the evenings before bedtime too. She was basically attached for hours. Charlotte is doing a little of that too, but it's more like constant nursing from midnight to 3am at this point. I just keep nursing and assume my supply will catch up to what she needs.

  • DD2 does at night. Normally she only eats on one side throughout the day, but at night she has to eat from both sides or she won't be satisfied enough to go to sleep and she tends to cluster feed in the evening. It's like she is tanking up for her 5-6 hour stretch of sleep-which is fine by me. I can't tell you how much she takes in a bottle because she refuses them....sigh...

  • She's so cute! I've tried BFing at night and he ends up falling asleep before he gets enough and then wakes up as soon as I take him off my boob. I'm guessing he's not an efficient BFer and is making up for it with the bottles, but it still seems like tons of milk for his tiny belly to handle all at once.

  • DS started taking 6-6.5 oz. of EBM in his before bedtime bottle very early on. . . around 4 weeks old, I'd say.

He was definitely not happy until he got that much and he didn't spit anything up (and sleeps a decent chunk after that bottle) so I just went with it.

That's the only time of day he regularly gets a bottle, so between my evening pumping session and the times I have to pump before I teach aerobics, I can keep up with the 6 oz. + any other small amount he may need while I'm teaching.

I was away for most of a day once (he was 7 weeks) and he took 28 oz. + nursed 2 times in a 24 hour period.  I pumped 32 oz. during that time period.

  • He's STTN, right?  Could be that he's tanking up to get himself through the night.  Are you only doing bottles or nursing too?  If you let him nurse that feeding even every other night, it would probably help with your supply.  Or, it might just be a growth spurt.

To answer your question, Adam nursed a ton when he was a newborn and I had major oversupply problems.  I have no idea exactly how much he was eating, but it was more than the kellymom quoted 25 oz per day, I am sure. Then again, he was born at 10 pounds and never looked back.

  • He does STTN. Okay, I'm starting to feel a little better.

At that age I would pump a more normal sized bottle and then just nurse after that.  Otherwise he'd drink and drink but wind up fussy/spitting up.

  • DS2 has been eating a ton since day one! Smile He started eating 4 ounces every 3-4 hours at 5 days old. He recently has started eating 4-5 ounces every 3-4 hours and last night even ate 6 ounces around 8pm and STILL woke up 4 hours later to eat more. I'd say as long as he's not spitting up a ton afterward, it's fine.
