French toast at day care, hmmm...

I've been trying to give Jake some solids to get him going (the boy has 3 teeth and another 3 almost already in) but he's not really interested. I give him some banana, he spits it out. I give him some cheese, he spits it out, I gave him a macaroni, he spit it out. So this morning, DH mentions to the day care provider that we're trying solids and they can try some with him too. (At the Air Force Base child care center, they provide ALL the food for the kids, including formula!) On DS's report for the day it says that they fed Jake french toast along with his banana & oatmeal puree. Now I'm sure he spit it out, as he does everything else, but wow...I haven't even given DS a Cheerio yet...and he went straight to french toast. Was it IHOP's cinnamon swirl, powdered sugar delight smothered in syrup, I'm sure not....but it took me by surprise nonetheless!

WDYT?

  • Lincoln has had ravioli pieces. We cut whatever we eat that is dairy free in to minute teeny tiny pieces, and he will chow down! It could be that it was a new environment, and he ate it better for them.... Have you tried puffs with him?

I gave him a puff a few weeks ago (stolen Jake's cousin) and he spit it out. I guess I'll go shopping tomorrow for some more things for him to try! Have you given Lincoln Cheerios?

  • We have not tried cheerios, but not for any particular reason! I just have not had them in the house I guess! We are introducing foods to him, and watching his reaction because of his food intolerances.

Solids will come.. It is just a PITA!

Re puffs - I have given Sam some even though he is technically too young for them. I break them in half and sort of hold them on his tongue until they start to dissolve.  After the first couple he got that they were fun and tasty (we were out at dinner with friends who have a toddler and she gave me a few).  Oddly puffs have been one of our few successes!

  • Some people go with teeny tiny pieces to start, and others give really big things for the LOs to gnaw on.  They may have had the French toast cut into strips and let him chew on it.  The idea is that they'll just get little bits and mostly the food will just dissolve as they hold it in their mouths.  The danger with some kiddos is that they will actually bite off a hunk.  (DS had a ton of teeth very early, so we were always afraid of doing this.)

I'd ask them about it tomorrow because I'd want to know what they're doing and how it went either way!

  • I'm not sure about the french toast...but Caroline loves finger foods.  She loves to feed herself...and will eat much more that way than if I try to feed her.

I give her (cut up of course) blueberries, puffs, cherries, carrots, english peas, potatoes, pluot, plums, apricots, watermelon, etc...she LOVES feeding herself finger foods.  She is a much better eater now than we she got strictly purees.

  • Try graham crackers.  Ryan LOOOOVES those things.  Seriously, don't even try to take it away when he has it in his hand.  Not happening.  ;-)

Yeah, I wonder how they fed it to him.. the vision of him chewing on strips  isn't so bad sounding...kind of like his Mum-mums! I'll have DH ask how it's delivered, thanks for pointing that out!

Your gorgeous little Caro seems so advanced to me! It's like she's ready to walk already for goodness sakes! Stick out tongue Everything she's done has been WAY before Jake. Is she crawling officially?

Agreed!  I wish I could get Alana to eat all of this!  She LOVES her purees, but, just not a fan of things with texture.  I do give her puffs and she makes these faces like I'm giving her poison, while still eating them, lol!  Tried slightly lumpy mashed banana tonight and, again, she ate a little but made faces at each bite.  But, then, I was giving her pieces of baked potato and that she seemed to like.  I'm really hoping she'll pick up (pun intended) on more finger foods over the next few weeks because it will make our week in Baltimore and then our week on California (2 weeks from now) much more flexible.

  • Honestly I had better luck with regular table foods than purees, DS pretty much ate whatever table food I put in front of him.

  • Henry didn't like banana the first time I gave it to him either. I just kept trying it every couple of weeks and now he loves it. Have you tried Mum Mums? They are a really easy first finger food and Henry still loves them.

As for the french toast, that doesn't seem all that far fetched. Unless you are worried that they are cooked with whole egg. I haven't been all that concerned with the whole egg thing in baked goods. Although I haven't yet given him a scrambled egg... Anyway... you never know what he is going to like. Maybe they gave him little bits of french toast and he loved it because it was sweet. At Jakes age, I would have been ok with it.

  • DD loved french toast at that age.

She always liked big pieces, and would bit off how much she wanted.  She's have been driven mad if I had cut things into tiny bits.  A couple of time she'd get too much in her mouth and just spit it out.

I don't think they are that far off to offer french toast at that age.  If you arne't okay with it, then just let them know.
