Potty Training

Overnight predicament

So, while we were on vacay a few weeks ago, DS woke up dry every morning, in his diaper.  He's been fighting me so bad to wear underwear overnight, so last week I finally said ok, we'll give it a shot.  Wednesday was the first night and he did great, woke up once in the middle of the night to pee, and was dry in the am.  Thursday he went to my mom's for the weekend and wet the bed every night.  Sunday at home he wet the bed.  So last night I decided he wasn't ready and put him back in a diaper.  He woke up dry this morning. Hmm

So, WWYD?  Keep putting him in diapers for now or keep trying underwear?  DS is one to pee in his diaper just b/c he can, he did that before we started PT and did great when we switched to underwear cold turkey.  So I don't feel like he'll ever consistently keep his diaper dry at night, even if he can.  I also realize it a maturity thing and not something we can "train".  But he's proved that he can.  And we do limit his fluids before bed and go potty right before bed.  However, anytime I wake him (either late at night or early in the am) he refuses to go potty.

Re: Overnight predicament

  • I would just stick with the undies. Yes it is a hassle but he will eventually get it (at least that is what I am telling myself). DS wakes up dry part of the time. He is getting better at waking up to pee though.

  • I think it is a personal call for you.  Are you willing to clean up the occasional mess?  Weigh that against how hard your DS is fighting you to wear underwear at night.

DH and I were super chicken with DD1--and she wasn't really fighting to wear undies at night.  She all of a sudden started waking up dry.  In the first week she had one night "accident" and then over the course of about 6 weeks only had one or two.  That's when we decided to ditch the diapers/pullups for good.  I think she had one or two accidents after that in the first few weeks and none since.  She now wakes up if she has to pee without fail.
