Anyone else NOT swaddle their newborn?

Not sure why our little guy is not sleeping long.  We're trying lots of things.  While nursing he needs lots of stimulation to keep him awake so I unwrap him.  But once finished, wrapping him seems to wake him.  And if he does stay asleep, he ends up struggling to get his arms out even if I've wrapped him as tight as possible (Using A&A swaddle blankets.  He hates the swaddle bags.)  He likes to sleep with his arms over his head when on our laps on the Boppy or in our arms.

Just wondering what other people are doing besides swaddling.

Mine doesn't like to be swaddled either.  She sleeps with her hands above her head.  We use the sleep sacks without the arm wrap.

Have you tried only swaddling him from the armpits down?  He might just like his arms out but the rest of him wrapped up.

  • We pretty much stopped swaddling once we left the hospital.  He always would kick and squirm free, plus it was just too hot for him.  He seems to be hot blooded.  He doesn't even like the blanket just over his legs and feet, he'll kick free of that before settling down to sleep.
  • I just try to swaddle from the armpits down. My LO hates having her arms restricted and always breaks them free!

  • We didnt swaddle DD b/c she would always wiggle until she got loose.  Especially her arms. She hated her arms being confined.

  • Try wrapping him in the shirt your wearing. I do that and While I am feeding DD I put a heating pad in her bed and get DH to take it our before I place her in bed. I hate swaddling and have avoided it since day one.
  • Thank you for the responses.  Great ideas.  Keeping my fingers crossed for a better night of sleep.

  • My LO liked to be swaddled for about the first 2 weeks.  After that though he would squirm so bad trying to get free.  So we started letting him sleep with out being swaddled and he hasn't had any problems.  He doesn't like to have a blanket on him at all either.  He will kick it off every time and if we try to cover his hands, because the get cold he will move them above his head.  He just doesn't like his hands or feet covered.  I started using the sleep bags that have the arm cut outs, that way his feet wont get cold.
