Success after IF

How many beta draws did you have?

I swear I think my RE is going for a world record.  Today was beta draw #5 and they're probably going to do two more before they release me at 8 weeks.  Is this normal?

I guess it's good that they're checking my hCG and progesterone, but I'm really feeling like a pin cushion!

Re: How many beta draws did you have?

  • WOW, I only had 2.

They normally only do two to see if it's doubled and then I was released

I just had two to make sure the number doubled....then a 2ww for my first u/s and afterwards another u/s before I was released.

Now that you're over 6 weeks I really am curious why they'd want to do betas -- they can just do u/s to see your baby and how he/she is doing.

  • yeah, that seems like a lot!    I only had two, and then they brought me in for an ultrasound at 6ish weeks.
Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation.
    Because we're fancy like that.

  • I've also had two u/s (last Monday and today) and I will have two more before 8 weeks.  Apparently my RE is very thorough.

  • I had 12 betas the cycle I miscarried and my hCG wouldn't go down. :p

But for the cycle I got pg with DS, I only had one. Apparently my RE doesn't even check for doubling as long as the first number is within acceptable limits. And then I had to wait three weeks for my first u/s.

The amount you're getting seems kind of excessive if everything is looking all right so far. But... enjoy it, I guess!

  • My first IVF I only had 2 and this one they want to do 3.  That does seem like a lot.

I had six this cycle but my betas were way lower than your numbers and there isn't usually a fetal pole until around 1500-2000.  After that - the best monitoring is u/s, not betas.  I think they're sucking your blood for no reason.  Unless they're monitoring your progesterone but that seems strange.
  • wow, that is a lot. I think the norm is 2. My RE only does 1 if your number is over 100 so I only had one.
  • Wow, that does seem like a lot!  My RE only does one beta.  As long as the number is strong they don't do repeats.  My RE also doesn't do a beta until a full 14 days past (IUI or IVF 3dt and 5dt) so once you get a positive beta you don't see them again for 2 weeks at your first u/s.

  • I only had 2 to make sure it was doubling.  I had an sonogram at 6 weeks and then again at 8 weeks to make sure everything was on track.  (my progesterone was really low, so my dr did 2 early sonos)
