Baby Names

Nickname for Oliver

My husband and I both like the name Oliver, but we're not fond of the nn "Ollie."  Is "Leo" too farfetched, or is it a reasonable nn for Oliver?  What do you think, or do you have any other nn for Oliver that go beyond Ollie?

Re: Nickname for Oliver

  • If you don't like Ollie, I wouldn't use Oliver.  I think there's a big risk that you end up with that as the nickname- you don't always have control over that.

I suppose you could try Leo but I think you will have to correct alot of people who call him Ollie.

I agree with PP, I think you will naturally call him Ollie when using baby talk.

Just call him Oliver. I have a friend who names her boys Matthew and Micheal and NO one calls them Matt or Mike. She just always intoduced them as Matthew and Micheal, so now, even in highschool, they go by their full names.

  • I don't think Leo is a good nn for Oliver.  I don't see the relation.

  • I think that if you go with Oliver he will inevitably be called Ollie by some despite the fact that you dislike it.  If you really don't like Ollie then I wouldn't choose Oliver as a first name.  We named our son Liam Jacoby, not thinking that some would shorten it to LJ which I hate but there is nothing I can do about it now.
  • I agree with elisbu and mjreilly - Leo doesn't work as a nn, and if you use the name, just call him Oliver. You can't control what his friends call him, but family should follow your lead.

  • I know a kid named Oliver and the other kids call him "Liver" as a nn. He doesn't mind but his Mother hates it.

  • Thanks everyone, for your responses!  Still not sure what we're going to do, but definitely helpful!
  • Would suggesting "O" be a bad idea? In my family, sometimes we just call each other by the first initial if it sounds ok. Ex: Jess is called J, Diane is Dee, etc.

  • What's wrong with just Oliver?? I know 3 baby Olivers and none of them are called nicknames. What will the mn be?? If you are insistent on a nickname then maybe make it from that. Or call the kid by his initials. Just don'tgive him a middle name that starts with P because O.P. would be bad!!

Or use Oliver as a MN.  I personally, LOVE Oliver and would never use a NN.

i agree. i think ollie is cute, but oliver is so popular and only going to move up the charts in the next several years so i think a lot of people will call him ollie [or he might decide to go by that].

  • My nephew is Oliver and his nn is "Olls"  (like dolls without the d).  This seems to work for them! :-)

    This,

and it's true - he will be Oliver if everyone is told his name is Oliver.  Or he will be shortened to Ollie if some people choose to do so.  You can't control the nns people give each other.  If you love Oliver, don't shorten it.

  • i'm a teacher and i had a girl in my class named Oliver. (yes, a girl) we called her Oli. it was really cute. i don't see the relation b/t Oliver and Leo either.
  • I love Oliver, but I think the only nickname you can get out of it is Ollie. Leo is a bit far fetched. I disagree with pp though in that people calling him Ollie is inevitable. I would never think to automatically shorten that name, especially if he was introduced as Oliver and not a nickname.
  • I have an Oliver.  He is 2 and no one calls him Ollie.  I always introduce him as Oliver so that is what people call him.
