What type of maternity clothes to get first?

I'm only 5 weeks, but I was a skinny minnie before and the bloat is so bad that I can't button any of my pants or my skirts. Even the waistband on my pajama shorts is feeling tight. I have heard about bella bands, and I am going to look in the maternity section of Target tonight, but what other suggestions do you have? Just wear the waistband lower below my blob of belly? I'm completely new to all of this.

My first purchase was sleep bras.  They were very much NEEDED.

I got a few Bella Bands from Target but they keep rolling down.  I'd love hints on how to keep them up!

  • My last pregnancy I skipped the bella bands and just moved right to maternity pants!

Sleep bras are the best thing in the WORLD. For me it was those, and a nice maxi dress since its SO freaken hot!

  • I liked the bella bands for the beginning. I'll be breaking them out sooner than later! :)

  • Bella bands never worked too good for me. Try a hair rubber band through the loop and around the button, it gives you and extra inch or two  :)

  • I found that Bella Bands worked best for me on DC#1 if I paired them with the same colored shirt (that was not necesarily maternity).  Like PP said, they ride up in the back and get out of place when you sit down - drove me nuts. I found it easier to just, for example, wear a large black shirt and pair it with a black bella band that I just pushed down to begin with - basically it covered that last 2-3 inches of my stomach and the top 2-3 inches of my pants that I left unbuttoned or unzipped. Most people didn't realize it wasn't just the one shirt or it thought it was an intentional layered look  - You can also try  looping a hair band through your pants button to give you 2-3 inches more.
  • Great suggestions, thanks!!!
  • I live in my jeans, so that was the first thing I wanted to get (the rubber band trick was only going to help me so much).  I found a pair of Seven jeans that I figured I would never be able to fit into again and sent it into Belly-Jeans to transform into maternity jeans.  I got them back last week, and oh my gosh!  I seriously wished I had these pre-pregnancy. :)  I love being able to eat, drink, bloat up, and not worry about how my belly looks.

I haven't found good work maternity pants yet (although I did buy a pair from Target) so I've been trying to hide the bump with loose skirts so far.  Thank goodness it's summer!

  • THe rubber band trick is great! I do like my bella band though. I use it by putting on my underwear, then putting the bella band on so it covers most of my butt and pulled up to below my chest. Then I put my pants on and fold the top of the bella band down over my unbuttoned pants. I have not had any problems with rolling when I do it this way.

  • With the first pregnancy the first thing I bought were sleep bras.  Then a Be Band (which I hated then, and still hate now).  Then maternity pants, then shirts).

Pretty much the same order this time, except MUCH faster.  lol.
