Anyone taking Prevacid?

When I talked to my doctor about my horrid heartburn, she told me to ask the pharmacist.  Tums make me sick and Pepcid wasn't doing anything.  I have been taking Zantac, but that seems to no longer be working either.

I spoke to a pharmacist today and he said he would recommend Prevacid over Prilosec.  So I might try taking that.

My heartburn is preventing me from eating most things and I spend most days in a state of misery because I feel so terrible.  Anyone else taking Prevacid/in the same boat?

Re: Anyone taking Prevacid?

  • Have you researched it to see if it is safe during pregnancy? I'm confused as to why your OB wouldn't have a good/safe recommendation for you...

  • Prilosec is Class C. When given to pregnant rabbits at high doses, Prilosec increased the risk of miscarriages. However various observational studies suggest that the medication may be safe for use in pregnant women.

Prevacid is Class B. Pregnancy Category B refers to medicines that resulted in no side effects to the fetus in animal studies but have not yet been studied in pregnant women.

I would still talk to your OB before you commit to anything.

  • When I did talk to my OB about it, she just instructs me to talk to the pharmacist (which is really weird, I thought...).

I know me.  I will probably just suffer through it and continue the Zantac.

  • I've been taking Zantac which was on my list of meds the Doc gave me.

Pepcid is on there as well. If my Doc tells me to take something, I'm not going to second guess it as well as a pharmacist. They know what they are talking about.

  • My doc said it was OK to continue, but try to take it less often than daily for two weeks... I've taken it once or twice a week and all seems OK.
  • I've been on Prevacid for years.  I thought for sure I'd have to go off it when I got pregnant, but my doctor said it's fine.  If I wasn't on it, I wouldn't be able to eat as I have severe GERD.  It's a class B drug, which is generally considered safe.

  • i had to take prevacid when i was pg with ds.  I had heartburn but mostly needed it because i had blood in my stool(sorry if tmi) I was a nervous wreck about taking it but my doc insisted it was fine.  My son is now a healthy 18 month old...so i guess all the worrying was for nothing.  It def. worked for me...hoping it works for you too!
