so...this was weird

We had N's 4th birthday party today (and it was a blast!).  So many friends from school came-it was like a little mid-summer preschool reunion!   Some of the parents asked when they RSVP'd if it was a drop off party.  I had replied that they were welcome to drop off if they were comfortable with that, but that I think most of the parents planned on staying.

So, the first kid who showed up was the one who hadn't RSVP'd either way so I wasn't expecting him (which was *totally* fine-there was plenty of everything for everyone).  But his mom just handed me her cell number and said they'd be back in a couple of hours.  OK.

When she came to get him, she acted all mortified that she didn't know she should have stayed.  I assured her it was fine, her son was a dream and he had a blast and it was really no biggie...but she didn't even RSVP, much less ask if it was ok to drop him off-so I thought it was weird to have such a reaction.

Would you assume a 4yo party was a drop off?  Would you ask first?

  • I would not drop my 4 yo off at a party, but I also tend to be very nervous.
  • I would not drop my 4 y/o off at a party.  I'm not sure when I'd let her go to a bday party alone ???  I think it would have to be at someone's house.

  • I'm  such a bad friend, sorry I didin't call to let you know that we weren't going to be there today. We left for the beach last night, last minute, not planned. Please forgive me!!!!

...and what??? Someone dropped off a 4 year old? WHAT???

no biggie!  We missed you, though!

okay, so I guess it's not me.  Like I said, the kid is a great kid and it wasn't a burden at all...but I thought it was strange.

  • No, I wouldn't assume that.  And even if it was supposed to be a drop-off party, I don't think I would drop off my 4 year old with someone I didn't know. I agree - very weird that she would act so surprised!
  • I'd never assume any party was a drop off party unless it was a sleepover. Mine aren't 4 yet, but when they turn 4 I wouldn't just leave them at a party unless it was at a family members house, and I would ask first.
  • Nope, I wouldn't assume a 4yo party was a drop off.  And I certainly wouldn't have done what she did without RSVPing.  I wonder if she thought she did, and that's why she felt compelled to drop him off.  IDK.  Glad to hear the party went well!

BTW - when are you moving back to Michigan?

  • I have a hard time dropping my child off at VBS and leaving, so I couldn't leave them at a bday party.  Blaire's 3d party, all of the parents stayed.

ugh...as SOON as our house sells.  We were just there over the 4th and I SO didn't want to come back...except for being responsible adults and all. :)
