Magical remedies for baby constipation?

She is in full mushroom cloud mode. No change in her formula but she ate bananas for a couple of days in a row and that apparently shut things down.

We've tried Karo syrup, apples, apple juice, prune juice, some q-tip encouragement, and are now trying glycerin suppositories.

Any magical remedies that we've missed?

  • The glycerin suppositories always worked for us.  Hope you get her back to normal quickly.

  • I don't have a quick fix (looks like you have some good suggestions above) but I wanted to add that peaches help things move along when Aiden gets stopped up. Bananas have the same effect on him. So maybe add some peaches into her routine for the future :)

  • Yellow pitaya (also known as yellow pitahaya, or yellow dragon fruit). My BIL's boy has severe constipation and this fruit always helps. Just a few spoonfuls should do the trick.

You may find it in Chinese supermarkets or Central Market.

Hope your baby gets better soon.

  • the guaranteed last resort for us are they glycerin suppositories.  I use the liquid one (only half the liquid).  She always poops everything out less than 5 secs after I finish giving it to her.  However, I don't use it often because didn't want her to be dependent on it.  But the was a 2 weeks period that I used it every 3-4 days.  And kept on adding apple/prune juice to her formula twice a day on top of that to get things softer.

Now that she's older, we give her 1/3 stage 1 prunes mixed with whatever fruit everyday for breakfast.  She hasn't been constipated since...

  • Watch out for the applesauce... I think that can slow things down along with the bananas.  I know the "p" fruits (peaches, pears, plums, and prunes) can help move things along.
  • pears are a sure thing for DD.
