New to The Bump

New and Questions about Conception

Hello! I am new to TheBump. and would like to introduce myself.

My husband and I got married almost a year ago. We are ready to have a child, but have had quite the time doing so!

In January of this year, I found out that I had 2 grape-sized tumors inside of my left ovary and a handful of masses in my right. I went into immediate surgery to remove the tumors and masses for screening of ovarian cancer. They were able to save 1 full ovary and partial pieces of the other and ruled out ovarian cancer.  Since that time, conceiving a child has been nearly impossible. I have been on the shot Lupron Depot, which puts me in a menopausal state to "rest" my ovaries so they may strengthen and work themselves out to hopefully be strong enough to have a child in the near future. On June 2 I got off of the shot and began the process of TTC. I was told from the Dr. that once I got off of the shot that I should have no problem conceiving. 2 smaller masses have grew back, not quite as strong and I was able to eliminate them with medication. We are approaching our 2nd month, with only 1 more to go before I have to go back on the shot for another 6 months or try IUI. I have not had a menstrual cycle since coming off of the shot, so it is too hard for me to use the ovulation calendar or predict when the best time is to try - Which could be half of the problem!?

My question is: Has anyone been on the Lupron shot? And if so, are you experiencing trouble conceiving? And how long after coming off of the shot did it take for you to have a menstrual cycle?

Thank you so much for reading this! God will bless us in time ...

  • Out of curiosity, are you charting?

  • I would post this on the IF board. And I would go straight to IUI. With your issues and timing, if you're OK with IUI, I wouldn't mess around with trying to figure this out.
  • They put many people on Lupron right before they do an IVF cycle. So pregnancy is def possible.

I would not go straight to IF board. You would probably fit better on TTTC. Lurk both and see what you think.

  • Charting, as far as fertility charting? No. Due to not knowing my menstrual cycle, it is hard for me to calculate that .. As the fertility calendar on here requires you to know when your last menstrual cycle was.

Would a ovulation test be accurate at this point?

Also. "Dr. Loretta" - In IUI, what are the benefits and shortcomings of that versus doing a possible ovulation tracking over time? Besides the length of time that it could take.

No, don't use an ovulation calendar. They are horribly inaccurate. Either get a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertiity from your library, or sign up for a tutorial from fertilityfriend.com. You would be charting your cervical mucus and basal body temperature to help you figure out when you ovulate. You track it over time to figure out your personal pattern. Once you have a better idea of what your pattern is, you can throw in an ovulation test to help predict when you're going to ovulate.

As for your direct question to me, I just wouldn't mess around if you have ovarian growths that keep coming back. With IUI, you may not even have to take meds if they monitor you. Your DH will give a sperm sample, they wash it to get the best ones, and they shoot it into you. Or you can go on low-dose fertility meds to pinpoint when you're going to ovulate, and they'll be better able to time the IUI. The only downside I can see is the cost, as you may have to pay all or part OOP depending on your insurance. With ovulation tracking over time, especially with your potential issues and having irregular cycles, you're potentially closing the window for this to happen.

I don't want to alarm you, I just see you not having a huge amount of time to make the decision on how to get pregnant. If you're not ready for IUI, you're not ready. I would totally understand that. I never was, actually. But if you think you are, in your situation I think it's a very good option.

The gals on the IF board would be able to give you more information from a technical perspective. You'd be an expert in no time!

  • Wow!! GREAT information! Thank you so much. I am ready to do whatever it takes, because I do only have a short period of time for all of this happening. I have an appointment with the specialist later this week so maybe we can get the book and get more information from the Doctor on the IUI side and make a decision. I will keep you updated!!!
