Lap bowel prep

How bad is it? Tell me about it, even the TMI stuff.

I did a bowel prep last year for a colonostomy, is it the same, better or worse? I am FREAKING out! I hated it before and am dreading it.

However, the dr was super great in talking about the lap and pain meds, nasua(sp?) from the anesteshia etc.....but I am SO NERVOUS about the bowel prep!

Thanks Embarrassed

Re: Lap bowel prep

  • Sorry, I can't be of help on this one. I was not required to do a bowel prep for my lap.

    Good luck!

  • I didn't think the bowel prep was too bad. It took me forever to drink the potion bc I couldn't get over how salty tasting it was.

I think I drank mine in the mid morning and was in and out of the restroom all day but definitely finished before going to bed.

  • IT was gross. I had to eat clear liquids all day and then drink the bottle of bowel cleansing stuff when I got home from work. I had to keep drinking until I pooped clear water. I was still passing water the morni g of surgery and was scared that I would do it accidently while under anesthesia.

  • Honestly, the bowel prep was the worst part of the surgery!  I stayed home that day before the surgery and was only allowed clear liquids.  That afternoon I had to start drinking the phosphosoda which I mixed in with Sprite to get it down.  Could only get down 1 bottle instead of the 2 that they wanted, but it worked well enough!  I was tied to the bathroom the rest of the night.  Get some Cottonelle wipes or Tuck's medicated wipes... toilet paper will be your enemy by the end of the night!  That and stay at home close to the bathroom.  I'm sorry, it sucks but it's necessary!  Good luck.

  • I had to do a bowel prep for my lab and it wasn't that bad. It took several hours for the liquid I drank to start working but once it did it lasted throughout the evening and then a few times at night and then in the morning right before surgery. I didn't feel very crampy or uncomfortable. I was nervous about it too but I didn't think it was bad at all. I used baby wipes to keep that area from getting sensitive from all the wiping. Good luck with your lap and your prep!
  • The bowel prep I did was the same one that is used for colonoscopy. It was hard for me to drink that much liquid that fast. I went the entire day. I started at noon instead of 2pm so I would get a good night sleep. HTH! GL!
