Insight on Katy/Houston, TX Area?? (not bump related)

Hi ladies-

I'm usually over at the TTGP board, but am looking for any insight I can get Smile.  There is a possibility that we would move to the Katy, TX area for work (currently in NC).  I've been to a few areas in Texas but never here (other than a stop through the airport).  What do you like about this area? Not like?  Recommendations?  We'd likely be able to take a trip there before making any decisions but I'm not even sure where to start!!  Any insight is greatly appreciated!! TIA!

  • We've been in Katy for a few years, but have had family in Katy for a LONG long time.  There are some really really great neighborhoods in Katy in several different price ranges.  I would recommend looking for a place to live south of I-10.  Katy has fantastic schools and that is one of the big things that drew us here.  We also love the easy and pretty quick access to Houston.

  • Thanks for the recommendation!  I've heard wonderful things about the schools which is a definite plus!

  • The Katy area is huge, and lies within 3 different counties (Waller, Fort Bend and Harris), so if you're looking to purchase a home, definitely do your homework as far as taxes are concerned, because it can make a huge difference in affordability.

Pros:  Katy has great schools and is a great community.  You can get a lot of house for your money, and there are some really neat neighborhoods.  There are a few master planned communities that will have just about everything, and there are smaller, more quaint neighborhoods that are older and have lots of mature trees and such.  Plus if you like a small-town feel, living in Katy proper will give you that.  The whole Katy area is really a great family area.

Cons: It isn't a very happening place.  They're finally starting to get better shopping out there, and the restaurant selection is growing, but there isn't much in the way of entertainment, nature, etc.  There are other Houston suburbs that have a lot more to offer in those areas.

Thanks for the link- I'll definitely research it!  I've seen that it's on 3 counties.  How would you rank them from a tax perspective??
