Mommy, is she pregnant or fat?

Yep, my 4-y-o daughter asked me that last week.  Out loud.  In public.  I tried to explain that it is not polite to ask if someone is pregnant because sometimes they are not and it can hurt their feelings.  But she did it again yesterday.  Out loud.  In public.  I ignored her as if I didn't hear the question.  How would you/ did you/  do you explain this to a child?

I would tell her that is not nice and she should never say that again. Some people are bigger than others and have a big belly and are not pregnant. I just went through this with my nearly 4 year old because I am pregnant and she thinks everyone now with a big belly is.
