yeast infection during pregnancy and harm to baby?

hi all,

I am so distraught. I had a UTI with a tenacious bacteria for about the last 4 weeks and they finally managed to kill it with antibiotics. My OB did a swab for yeast last week and it she told me this week that it came back positive for yeast (probably due to the antibiotics) even though I don't have a lot of symptoms (i.e. cheesy discharge or persistent itching)....she did an internal exam even though I asked her if it was safe (because I didn't want the yeast or anything else pushed up towards my cervix). She poo-poohed me and said it would not cause the yeast to go into the uterus.

I googled and found out that yeast can get up into the uterus and cause chorioamnionitis that can be really dangerous for the baby (even cause stillbirth). It's supposed to be rare (like 1-4%) but then my pregnancies seem to be case studies in the rare... plus 1-4% doesn't sound all that impossible to me....

I am 36 wks today and I am on edge about everything. I am convinced that some infection is going to take my baby again...initially my OB said she would deliver at 38 wks but now she is trying to push me back to 39 wks....given how upset i am and all these infections (and my history) I just feel like the baby would be safer outside my body....

Re: yeast infection during pregnancy and harm to baby?

  • I'm sorry you're going through all of this, but just remember: GOOGLE IS SCARY!!!!!!!! I'm sure your LO is totally fine.  I had my one and only (in my life) yeast infection at 37 weeks and I was already dilated 1cm and everything was fine :) Hang in there...

  • thanks, we are getting an opinion from a second peri tomorrow....i know I have a lot of psychological issues due to our loss but really this pregnancy has also been an exercise in fear/paranoia with SCH bleeding and one weird infection after another...I don't think I've had a day of peace....i am so so worried that something will go wrong in the next few weeks with all the infections and I really don't know what I would do...she is 36 wks and 6+ pounds and I just want her out of me so she can be away from all these bugs I seem to get.....

my first peri who also saw us with the twins - well my OB was consulting with him but when I wanted to set up an appointment to consult about what to do with all the infections, his receptionist would not even give me an appointment - she told me that he would just do whatever my ob wanted to do - come to find out AFTER the treatment that he didn't agree with the course of treatment - but of course, when I tried to consult him so we could make an informed decision, I couldn't.....that's why we are trying a few other peris.....

  • I went through the same exact thing at about 35 weeks! My ob gave me meds but said because I was so far in my pregnancy not to worry about it and the percentage of problems is so low

  • I have no advice but I'm sorry you're feeling so anxious and I can't blame you given your history.  And I agree with the pp - google can be awful - hang in there!
  • I have recurrent infections too and my first loss (2nd tri) was due to chromiamniotis.  Internals are fine at your point, even with stuff in there.  Infection of the sac can happen at this point, but it usually isn't bad for the baby.  If you get that at 24wks, much worse for the baby.  I know a few girls online who had their baby at 26wks or so and their baby wasn't quite infected but the sac was.  They are fine.  But the reason their water broke was due to their infection.

My dr won't do internals on me until 35wks.  Well, I lie as my peri has done some on this pregnancy - this week and 3 wks ago (I was 30wks) oh and at 27wks only to measure my cervix because of shortening.  Had I had an active infection at the time, he would not have done it most likely, but I think at your point you are fine.  With a cerclage and a possible infection, they don't like to disturb things until 35wks, etc.
