Obsession with running water?

Is anyone else's toddler obsessed with running water? In the bath, at the water table, or in the pool, all James wants to do is stick his hands under the faucet or have me pour water from a container so he can stick his hands under it. Over and over and over. And if I try to get him interested in something else or put the container away, he gets extremely upset.

I looked it up online and of course what pops up? Autism. Which is something you all know I've been worried about with James since the beginning. Argh. However, while he seems to really have some of the characteristics (obsession with running water, spinning wheels, delayed langauge development), he doesn't have some of the others. He's pretty social, can make good eye contact, and babbles like crazy.

Just wondering if maybe the water thing is common at this age.

yes...my 2 year old loves loves loves running water.  She could stand at the sink all day.  She always wants to wash her hands and gets mad when I make her leave the bathroom and turn it off.  Same in the tub... and if the sprinkler is on.  I am not at all worried about autism though...her speech is above average for her age and she is very social...I do think it is a toddler thing...

  • Hannah loves water in general. The pool, tub, water table, the hose. She walks up to the hose and sticks her face in it! She also sticks her face in the bath tub water. She tried drinking rain water off of our patio set like the dog. She plays in it all of the time. I think it's normal for this age.

  • Jack is happiest sitting in the bathtub while the shower is on - and last night when I turned the shower off, but left water running full force out of the main faucet - he thought it was the GREATEST THING EVER.  When I turned it off he had a fit - crying and throwing in several SCREAMS of outrage for good measure.

And he is brilliant and hilarious and I have no fears of autism (in spite of him not clapping or waving until he was close to 16 months old!!)

    Wheee!

  • They've almost kicked Ava outta Club Kid because she won't leave the sinks and drinking fountains alone.

Her day revolves around water. Water in buckets, water on the steps. Water as "paint" with a paintbrush and she "paints" the house. Water in her sand table. water in her pool. water in buckets that she hauls all over and waters plants with. water in her cups that she pours from one to another.  Sinks, toilets, tubs, highchair trays....

    water water water.

We can never move to the desert.

She is, however, a Pisces ;-)

My DS likes those things too - he loves washing his hands, and when we run the water in his bath.  And today, I couldn't tear him away from someone else's stroller at the playground because he was spinning a wheel that was not on the ground.  He also didn't really start saying anything until 15.5 months, but now he won't stop talking (although half the time I have no idea what he is saying - most of his words sound the same).  I am definitely not concerned about autism for him, so I think your DS is normal!
