gait trainer?

Did anyones LO use a gait trainer? Did it help them learn to walk? My DD's physiatrist recommended one for the future but her physical therapist doesnt think its necessary. I doubt I could afford one anyone but did anyone find it useful? My DD has low tone and doesnt walk (she army crawls and scoots).

I am a special ed teacher- many of my students in the past have had gait trainers.  For most of them it did help- but we had tons of adaptive equipment like this in our school....their parents did not purchase it.  The only time a parent purchased equipment was when medicaid helped them pay for a stander.  GL!

My DD has the KidWalk gait trainer and we love it.  It rocks.  She isn't strong enough, yet, to move it by herself, but she can walk with it if you push it along slowly.  It also holds her in places I couldn't.

That is cute! I wish I had access to one but I have physical therapy thru early intervention and I know my insurance wouldnt cover. But I'd love to see my DD try one. It looks like your DD is having fun.

You should ask your EI about loaning one from them or info. on where you can loan one from. I'm not sure where Scotch Plains is, so I can't look this up for you, but most states have an organization with loaner assistive technology or adoptive equipment. In the state that I'm in right now, they loan those through the school and you need it on your IEP. Other states loan directly through the parents. Your EI people should be able to help you access this.

We just got Ben a KidWalk and it is going well so far.

You might want to double check on the insurance we thought our insurance wouldn't cover it either and with a prescription from our pediatrician and OT they did. If not are you receiving respite and daycare services? The reason I ask is the program that funds this, in our case San Andreas Regional Center I have heard other local chapters referred to as El, may be able to help you with the expense. I was told if our insurance denies any medical equipment we can provide the denial letter and they will pay for the adaptive equipment needed. btw, we love our gait trainer.
