Toddlers: 24 Months+

s/o speech question

So the post below about EI got me thinking. I'm not worried about DS's language. I think he's doing great in terms of acquiring new words and understanding. But I'd say about less than a quarter are properly pronounced, even allowing for aslight toddler lisps and things. ("wa-er me-on"  and "ye-wow" = well enunciated for me; "hock" for snack and "ba" for any number of things, less so...)

So, how clearly does your 24-30m old enunciate and pronounce words?

Re: s/o speech question

  • DS has been in speech therapy for 6 months. He started with about 10 signs and virtually no words. He now has hundreds of words and uses 3-4 word phrases.

At this age (2 years old), his therapist is looking for about 50% to be intelligble to someone who doesn't know him.  I think he meets that on most days, but sometimes it's a bit less.

  • I think this is normal for a 2 year old. DS speaks very clearly on most things, but for some reason words that start with -SL get pronounced -SN, so sleep is sneep. But since he holds entire conversations with people and they can understand him I am not worried and know he will outgrow the -SN thing.

  • At two, only DH and I could understand DS, and I still had to do lots of translating for DH.  Now, only 2.5 months later, his pronunciation is much improved.  I'd say we're at 50% clarity, and people who are around toddlers a lot have no problems understanding him.

  • I test kids for Occupational Therapy when they transition from EI to a preschool program.  I was talking to the Speech therapist that I test the kids with and she told me that at age 3, most boys don't qualify for speech to work on "articulation" because they are allowed to make a ton of errors at this age and still be considered age appropriate.  Boys are allowed to make more pronunciation mistakes than girls.  So I'd say at this point, not to worry!
