What were your delivery experiences like at these hospitals? Which has nicer facilities? Staff?
Do you have a recommendation for your OB?
I'm new in town and just found out I'm pregnant. We live about equal distance from both of the hospitals. Which would your recommend?
Re: Abbott or Fairview Southdale
of those two, Southdale probably. Abbott has a ridiculously high c/s rate.
If you're open to it, there's a new birth center in Saint Louis Park that wouldn't probably be a bad drive from your area.
Hi - I delivered in May at Abbott Northwestern and had a great experience. We liked all of our nurses. The hospital was nice, the food was decent and it is connected to Children's Hospital so, if there was an issue, a top notch NICU was very close. The only issue I had is that all of the delivery nurses were too nice...I needed a nurse that was going to take charge and not keep telling me I was doing a "good job" pushing when clearly I wasn't doing it right. Luckily I went to a midwife, Deb Stealey at Diamond Women's Center in Edina, and she gave me the exact tough encourgaement I needed so we could go the extra mile on pushing and have a vaginal childbirth. I would HIGHLY recommend Deb and Diamond Women's Center. If you choose Fairview Southdale, you have to use an OB as they don't let midwives delivery babies there.
Everyone's experience is different. I'd find a doctor you love first before figuring out where you're going to deliver. They might only deliver at one of the two hospitals and that will make your decision for you. You can also tour both hospitals and see which you like better.
I plan to deliver at Abbott. John Haugen and Associates in Minneapolis work with both Southdale and Abbott. My sister delivered at Abbott both times and had a good experience. I have a friend who works as a nurse there and is excellent. The high c/s rate is probably due to serving more high risk patients overall, not due to a difference in the care they provide. Good luck deciding!
I delivered at Southdale Fairview and had a great experience. I have had friends who have deliverd at Southdale and Abbott and also had good experiences.
I have heard Abbott is the best but I rec Southdale.
I would pick your doc and see where they deliver.
good luck!
I delivered at Abbott and had a great experience. Plan on delivering there again in October. Had a c section because she was breech, so I was there for 3 days, and it was all great.
But again - check with your OB because sometimes they only deliver at certain locations.
Have you found an OB yet? If those are the choices, here's what I know:
I had 2 c/s @ Abbott and was V. impressed w/ care and felt well cared for. AND, if you have any reason for concern on the health of your baby, the Children's hospital is right there but...
the rooms are dated and the bathrooms small. I think Fairview's rooms are much nicer.
I'm currently inpatient at Abbott for the remainder of my PG. I see the MN Peri's and everyone is wonderful. We all have the same goals in mind (to keep these LO's cooking as long as possible). My nurses are great and PP are right they have a lot of high risk patients here. My LO's will likely be in the NICU so I am very grateful that Childrens is connected.
H&H!
Abbott! I delivered my first there, lived out-of-state for the 2nd, and after moving back, specifically found an OB who delivered there for #3. As PP have stated, the rooms are dated, but the staff is wonderful.
It was also comforting to know that Children's was connected, so if anything went wrong there were great facilities right next door.
I delivered at Southdale. Not by choice though - Maple Grove was my first choice as is 7 minutes from my house. However, my water broke at 33 weeks and I had to be ambulanced from MG to SD because MG only takes patients 34 weeks and above.
I was on bedrest for a week at SD. All the nurses except for maybe 1-2 were great. The nurses that were at my delivery were amazing. Also the nurses in the NICU were great as well.
Facilities are OK. Food isn't good. I did have a chocolate milkshake and strawberry smoothie every day though
