STTN Help!

My twin girls are 34 weekers born May 1st so they are 2 1/2months old (oor 1 1/2 adjusted). We are still feeding them every four hrs even at night. The only difference is at night after their 7 pm bottle we let them sleep until they cru for food instead of waking them (we do the same for the 3 am feed as well). Any twin preemie moms have any input in when they started sttn? Was it when they started taking more food? Any input/advice/personal stories would be great!

Re: STTN Help!

  • My boys were 36 weekers, they didn't STNN until 6 months....At 2 months they were waking up 3x /night between 7pm and 7am..I think at 3 months they dropped that to two feedings (like 1am and 4am)...then like at 4-5 months dropped to one feeding anytime between 2am-5am...and eventually at 6 months, I let them CIO (but they only cried for 10 minutes!).

Good luck! Hang in there :)

  • My girls were born at 36w6d. They are 6 months old and still wake every 3-4 hours to eat. I'm not sure if its because they're tiny (12lbs and 13lbs) or if its out of habit. Either way, I thought and hoped by now I'd be sleeping more. I know its not what you want to hear. The good news is your body starts to adapt better to the sleep interruptions. Hang in there!

  • My girls were born at 35w2d and still get up at least once, and usually twice to eat each night. They're on the smaller side, so that may have something to do with it.

I do agree with the PP though, the sleep interruptions do become more manageable. I think I stay half asleep during feeds, and am back to sleep within 2-3 minutes of crawling back into bed.

  • My girls were born at 32 weeks and they are 3 months old. They were in a Pack N Play in our bedroom and started to have more issues with reflux, so we let them sleep in their FP little lamb bouncers for a night. They slept for 5 hours! We are on our third night in a row with them sleeping that long. Before, they were waking every 3 hours to eat.

I read on here or the preemies board (can't remember which) about twin's sleeping schedules and that you shouldn't wake both twins just because one is hungry. We tried it last night, and my one girl slept for 8 hours! Don't know if it is a fluke, but 3 nights of semi decent sleep is awesome!

Good luck to you! Hopefully your little ones will be STTN soon!

  • My boys were 37 weekers, they now weigh 14 & 17 lbs and they still don't always STTN.  I usually feed them every 3 hours during the day and at night I feed them at 6pm then bedtime, then I do a dreamfeed at 10pm before I go to bed and they usually wake anytime between 2am-6am.

I think we might be close to STTN but we're still not there yet.  Hang in there, hopefully they'll get their soon!  Are you feeding them every 3 hours during the day?  How much are they taking in at each feeding?  Have you tried putting on a larger diaper in case they wake up because they're wet?  How are they napping during the day?

  • Our boys started STTN at 16 weeks... 6 weeks adjusted.  I really think it helped that they got alot of their calories during the day feeding every 3 hours... that gave them enough intake to last overnight.  I would try feeding more often during the day in hopes that they don't need as much overnight.
