Breaking the swaddle habit

I think it's time. Plus she breaks her arms free almost every night anyways no matter how tight it is. Do I just go cold turkey and get rid of it? Will she be warm enough without it? She sleeps in a long sleeved footed sleeper but sometimes when she breaks her arms out, her hands feel cold when she wakes up.

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit

  • i don't have advice on breaking the habit- Abby hated being swaddled and Sarah loves it (she's still in it, too!)  If your dd isn't pulling herself up yet, they sell sleep sacks.  They're blankets with arms and zip up.  I used to put them over A's pj onesie and she stayed warm.  She even rolled over in it and it never got tangled or anything.  She stayed warm and was able to move her arms around and everything.
  • How does she sleep? Well? If she does, I would not change anything honestly. If she wakes herself up getting out of the swaddle that is one thing...but if it helps her fall asleep then I would just keep it up.

  • As long as she's not waking up when she busts out, I would keep using it. If she does wake up when she busts out, just go cold turkey. I was really worried about it too, I think Zoe was swaddled til she was like 5 months or something crazy like that! I went cold turkey and just made sure she had warm jammies on and it was no big deal!
  • I swaddled both of mine until they started breaking out.  I unswaddled cold turkey.

If you think she will be cold, put a onesie and socks on her under her pajama sleeper.

  • Right about 7 months Leila started to do the same so I started swaddling her whith her arms out, at about 81/2 months she would get completely out of the whole thing so I just stopped cold turkey.  She also uses a long footed sleeper but we don't have problems with her being cold....

  • Sometimes I hear her fighting the swaddle to bust out but she sleeps pretty well for the most part so maybe I'll just keep it up for a little longer. I thought maybe I'd be creating a bad sleep association with it at some point but from your experiences that seems to not be the case. I have a feeling she's going to be done with it sooner rather than later anyway so I think I'll look into one of those sleep sacks. Thanks!

  • When I unswaddled DD I started off by unswaddling her legs, then I would unswaddle one of her arms, and then I stopped swaddling completely.
