Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Repeat ? for a.m...Dessert only 1st birthday party? (PICS added!)

We're thinking we'll probably do one - cupcakes, fruit, cake pops, choc. covered pretzels, etc.  We'll probably have the party between lunch and dinner, so not directly during a meal time.

I was wondering if anyone else had done this since most posts I've seen have mentioned having full meals. If you did/or are doing just desserts, what does your menu look like?

Thanks!

  • hi...saw your post last night but i didn't answer b/c we don't have a 'menu' other than cake/cupcakes. For various reasons I didnt want to do a big party for our twins (we don't live near our families & it would get complicated & very large w/ local friends etc) so we're giving them their first cake at our neighborhood pool & I'm going to bring cupcakes for friends who show up (no official 'invite' just an FYI, T&B will be celebrating their first piece of cake at the pool on Sunday! kind of thing).

GL! I think a dessert only party is fine, obviously. Maybe a couple easy munchies too though for ppl who dont like dessert that much, depending on how many ppl you're having...

  • I'm doing a dessert-only party at a local park. I'm thinking I'm just going to pick up a cake from Costco, and that will be the only food. I'm probably also going to get some lemonade. I'm trying to make it so that cake, plates, napkins, forks, lemonade, cups, ice, cooler, table cloths, bday bib, and trash bags are the only thing I will be bringing. It's going to be really hot here, and I'm a single mom, so I want everything to be as low-maintenance and wallet-friendly as possible.
  • DS's b'day is in August and to beat the heat we are having a mega ice cream sundae bar.  There is a dairy farm in the area that makes fabulous ice cream that we are getting.  I have also purchased every kind of topping and plan to make brownie bites and homemade hot fudge.  So in answer to your question, we will be having "mostly" dessert.  I will have a birthday cake and a few salty munchies to go with it.   The time is from 2-5, kind of open house style for those that want to choose the time, but knowing my family, they will hang out for the duration.  I am so busy with our catering business that the idea of doing a full-blown party did not appeal to me.

I love the "Hostess With the Mostess" Blog and "Kara's Party Ideas" Blog.  They are obsessed with dessert tables and have LOTS of really cute ideas for every theme imaginable.

i could have typed a very similar post...

we are also doing just a small gathering w/ cake (or cupcakes...I am on the fence) w/ verbal invites.

And I dunno, I may provide snacks...again, on the fence.  LOL, as you can see, I have done very little planning.  But its definitely going to be an inbetween meals-thing.

I've been to one before and they did it at 1:30pm. I think if you do it too early or too late, people may expect food. It's a great idea but the timing is really important.
  • I have never been to or have heard of a dessert only party. ?I think that if you plan on doing this regardless of the time you would need to specify on the invite that it will be a dessert only party. ?I know that if it wasn't specified and I was a guest I would probably show up hungry and leave hungry or full and hyper off of sugary treats. ?

  • I replies last night as well but have a few other ideas (although you didn't ask for them LOL)

I think its a great idea. I agree with PP timing is crucial, make it between meal time. I think that it would be cute to do some type of sweet or cupcake theme and word on the invites that its a dessert only party (such as "Join us for cake, sweets and fun! LO is turning one!).

I love the site Kara's party ideas and several of her "sweet' themed parties would work and ther are great decor ideas.

When we were growing up, that's all we ever had -- cake and ice cream.  Nowadays, it seems like most people do a full meal/dessert, but it's just too expensive for us right now.  We will definitely specify "join us for dessert" to celebrate dd's birthday.

Thanks for the wording for the invite -- I think that sounds really cute!
