Healtheast first appt.

I have never been to Healtheast before and do not really know much about them.  I know I will be delivering at St. Johns and thats about it.  So I guess my question is what can I expect at my first appt. tomorrow?  Will they do an ultrasound?  Blood?  I probably should have asked them when I made the appt. huh?! ;-)

Anyways, any of your experiences would be great.

Re: Healtheast first appt.

  • It somewhat depends on how far along you are.  I saw the Healtheast midwives, and they didn't want to see me until 11-12 weeks.  But, I have heard of others being seen right away.

I would guess that they will for-sure do some blood and pee work.  They will definitely discuss some 'pregnancy basics' with you - ie, do's, don'ts, etc.

They may do an internal exam depending on when your last one was.

If you are confident in knowing how far along you are, and have no other risks/issues, I doubt that they will do an ultrasound at your first appointment.  Unless something else comes up, you can expect an ultrasound at around 20 weeks.

If you are over 10 weeks, I imagine that they would try to find the baby's heartbeat with the doppler so that you can hear it, but depending on how far you are, I wouldn't worry if you don't hear it this time.

    Congratulations and good luck!

  • most likely bloodwork, urine test, pelvic exam and a lot of talking about what is and isn't ok. They may do a pap, depending on when your last one was.

It's the norm to not get an u/s until 20 weeks, unless they determine a medical need or you end up being high risk. I know the bump makes it seem like the norm is that you get u/s all the time, and that's not really true.

  • I think most places are routine like the pp's said. I was around 8 weeks at my first appt. and it was too early to hear a hb on the dopplar, so the Dr. had me go in for a u/s the following week just for confirmation (i.e. no blighted ovum, etc.).

I think the other time you'd get a u/s is if you choose to do the first trimester screening for trisomy and downs.

  • Like the others said, I think it's pretty standard everywhere, maybe changes slightly from place to place.

My first appointment with each pregnancy (found out early on with both) was with a nurse...to go over the "do's" and "don't's" and fill out some paperwork, then off to the lab for blood draws (LOTS of blood draws) and urine collection. They had me come back a couple weeks later, when I was further along, for my first midwife appointment, where I had a pelvic exam and more discussion. Since things happened so strangely with both pregnancies, I did get an early u/s after my initial appointment to date the pregnancy, otherwise you sometimes won't get one until you are around 20 weeks, unless there is something concerning.

  • I had an u/s, bloodwork, urine testing at my first (8 week) appt. I went to Generations Women's Health and delivered at St. Johns. I loved St. Johns- no complaints at all.
