Nothing horrible to say about it except that to me it seems "90s Trendy," but if you love it, I don't think there's any obvious reason why you shouldn't use it. It's a fairly decent name.
I like it but ONLY as a NN for "the third." For example, my great-grandfather was Robert Wilson B (called Robert), my grandfather was Robert Wilson B. Jr. (called Bob), and my uncle was Robert Wilson B. III, but went by "Trey" his whole life. I don't like it at all for a stand-alone name.
I think of this adorable guy I had a mad crush on in, like, seventh grade, haha. So I guess it has positive connotations. That said, I do think it sounds a little back-country... don't know why. No side eyes for using it, though.
Re: Thoughts on the name Trey?
It makes me think of Trey, Ryan Atwood's brothery on The O.C. and Charlotte's first husband on Sex and the City, so not very savory connections.
If I met a baby Trey, I'd probably think it sounded sort of tacky. I once met a Kayden/Trent sibset, which is what it sort of reminds me of.
I like it.
I think of it as a nick name for a boy who is the third bearer of the name...like Will Smith's son (Willard Smith III).
I also think of a tray - a think you put food on to carry to your lunch spot.
