I read in a previous post that strawberries and raspberries are off limits. So my question is, I bought pear/raspberry fruit combo..should I not feed it to LO? Why are they off limits?
The gerber (or whatever brand) prepared purees are fine. The strawberries and rasberries have been cooked. Something about them being highly allergenic.
Our Ophelia loves berries. She was getting lots of berries before it got to hot and they all dried up outside. She's had strawberry, wine berry, raspberry, blueberry, mulberry, etc
I started out giving them in the mesh feeder. Even the seeds aren't an issue unless you have ciliac (sp) disease in the family or something. They just poop them out.
A lot of things that folks used to avoid don't need to be avoided anymore. They changed recommendations in 2008.
Our pedi ok'ed us to give all berries after 6 months. He said the AAP is no longer recommending waiting until after a year to introduce them. A few years ago the AAP said to wait until after a year because they thought the number of food allergies would decrease, but the opposite actually happened and there were more allergies. So I think you will be fine to introduce raspberries especially since they have been cooked (I think the heat breaks down the potential allergy causing protein).
Our pediatrician okayed all foods (including berries) after 6 month. Lukas loves rasberries, seeds and all (I would only delay them if someone in your family has a berry allergy)
