Article: Weaning at 9 months

Re: Article: Weaning at 9 months

  • I read this yesterday.  I thought it was weird that the article says you should wean off of bottles and sippys by 1.  What 1 year old can drink out of a cup without making a big mess?  I get not letting them drink sugary drinks for extended periods every day because its bad for their teeth, but if that was the point of the article it wasn't very clear.

  • I want to know what is a "prolonged period of time".  Is it 10 minutes?  I give L one bottle a day--his bedtime bottle.  He finishes it in under 10 minutes.  Is this too long?  Is my child going to get cavities b/c I give him this one bottle?  My pedi told me to wean him off the bottle and into a sippy cup.  He uses the sippy cup for every other drink during the day--only water.  At this point, L WON'T drink milk out of any other container but the bottle.  I think I will be using the bottle until I wean him off of the bedtime bottle. (Or until he will drink milk from another container...)

  • I haven't read the article yet, but from reading your responses, I just have to say that Colton still drinks out of sippys.  Especially for milk.  I don't want any spilled milk wasted or having to be cleaned up!
  • Rhett pretty much self-weaned from the bottle at 9 months and it was a huge PITA. He was not good enough with the sippy/straw cup to get all of the formula the pedi wanted him to have from them and I can't even begin to describe how frustrating it was. I'm sure some kids are ready at 9 months, but all of them definitely aren't! He did wean off bottles easily right at 12 months and by then he was doing great with the straw cup. He can mainly use a regular cup pretty well now, but we still do milk in a sippy for the reasons Kristen mentioned.

  • It doesn't say TO wean at 9 months but to start. Instead of waiting until the 12 month visit and then saying "your kid should be off bottles by now" and then you feel pressured to do it right away instead of a gradual 3 month process.

"Keels says the bottle and sippy cup are not the problem. It's the content."

If your kid drinks apple juice from a cup all day everyday, they're still going to have problems.

I think it's a good idea to always address expectations of "between now and the next appt" I think it's just something that's been missing a long time.

This is probably a win win for everyone.

Oops, I meant to come right back and post and got busy.

But, yeah, I have the same opinions! And ditto smb.

For some reason the article got under my skin, I think b/c it sounded a lot like our pedi...and I don't agree with her on stuff like this.  (She told us around 9 months to be weaning Ocho off of her pacifier for dental reasons, but Ocho's dentist has no problem with it since she only uses it at night, etc.) I think it contradicts the other recommendations, like to BF to one year and beyond.  I also wonder why it didn't just put more emphasis on just brushing teeth?

It's all over the place really. Maybe not contradictory, but it sends confusing, mixed information.  The article talks about parents being given information and weaning off of bottles within one week (of the 9 month appointment, apparently).  Then it goes on to compare bottles/BF.  So, it reads to me like either/both should be weaned earlier than one year.  Maybe that's just me though.

ETA: Article author does say weaned at 9 months: "Short conversation with parents reinforces need to stop bottle-feeding at 9 months, study says."  She may be misinterpreting the study, but my point was the article was all mixed up and confusing information.

This is good to remember.  I hadn't thought of it this way...and I can have L weaned from the bottle btw. now and next appt. no prob.
