my old one was an evenflo and it leaked from day 1. i just BF and never was able to pump. my friend had lent me her medela with mady (i sterilized all parts before use) but as of recent it broke and she no longer has one.
i don't want to spend a lot of money on a new one. is this something i desperately need? i plan to bf this time around too, but what if evan can't latch on...what if my supply doesnt come in this time around...and what if like last time it was medically necessary for me to stop at 3.5 months to BF (i went thru surgery)? i'm just looking at all my possibilities before spending money on an item that may not be worth it.
opinions?
Re: breast pumps
What if you hold off on purchasing one and try to bf. If it doesn't work, BRU and hospitals rent them out and I believe they even have the rent to buy plan as well (if you choose to buy it, you can put whatever money you already paid on renting it towards the total price.) I would hold off on purchasing it until you try bfing!
I went out and bought a pump before Abby was born, I tried to bf, it never worked, i tried to pump, i never produced any milk at all, and i couldn't return the pump. I was out the money for a pump and didn't get to bf/pump at all. I wound up giving the pump away!
I'm not sure if you've looked into this, but I believe that Medela can send in some replacement parts or you can send it to them and they'll fix it for you. You would probably have to ask your friend about the warranty.
The Ameda Purely Yours is supposed to be just as good (some users like it more than the Medela) and it's about half the price: https://www.amazon.com/Ameda-Purely-Yours-Breast-Pump/dp/B002G51EJ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1279027079&sr=8-1
Like the other girls have also mentioned, you can rent one out from the hospital or some pharmacies for about $50 a month and some will apply that cost towards the purchase of a pump if you decide to buy one later.
I'm still undecided about what to do as far as purchasing a pump. I'd hate to spend almost $300 on something that may never get any use.

I have the Lansinoh BPA free double electric pump. Have been using it for the past 10 months and has been a blessing in the skies. It is not that pricey and work wonders. Never had leaking or any other problems with it. https://www.amazon.com/Lansinoh-Double-Electric-Breast-1-Count/dp/B001TUZOBA/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1279029121&sr=1-8
As far as renting I'm not sure but a friend once told me she rented hers from the hospital for $20 a week, if this is true I think it's more worth just buying one.

I used the Medela Single Pump for all three. It's compact (fits in your purse), battery operated, effective, and best of all $70. I found that it was all I needed and still kicking four years later. And I am obvisously a working mother - so it definitely got the job done. BRU sells the accessory set for $25. I would just buy a new accessory set after each child was born. I had gotten a dual breast pump as a shower gift but never used it. IMO - there were too many parts. I wanted/needed something quick and easy to use.

I used the Medela Pump In Style (double electric) for both kids and loved it. It was a hand me down, but I would have bought it--it worked great. I had to buy another when it was stolen (Medela Freestyle--loved that one), and that was great, too.
Medela has great customer service, even on hand-me-down pumps. A part broke on mine and I called them to see if I could order the part, and they sent it to me, for free and free shipping, and it arrived in one or two days. Amazing amazing. Definitely worth a call to them!
