Potty Training

She is fully pooped trained but won't tell me when she needs to go potty!

Olivia started telling us she needed to go poop when she was 18 months old.  She is fully trained in going poop and now that I am off work this summer it is time to tackle going potty on the toliet.

I take her ever so often and she always goes...it is never a fight but she rarely tells me when she needs to go potty.  I feel like we are so close to being trained if she would just tell me like she does when she needs to go #2.

I have "dora" underwear and show her all the time and tell her she needs to start telling me she needs to go potty so she can wear her big girl panties but it isn't working.

Any suggestions?

  • Have you tried just putting the panties on her...  You may be in for a few accidents but maybe when she actually feels what it`s like to wet herself it might start to click.  And when it does click, reward her like crazy!!!  Figure out what she`ll do anything for.  For DD, it was smarties and stickers on an Elmo chart at first, then she got bored with the smarties and I found some other yummy candies (according to her) that she`d go potty for if I gave her some.  I also think you`re in the right direction with the Dora panties!  DD has princess ones and loved to show them off because she`s so proud of herself.

And ask her ALL THE TIME if she has to go.  I`m sure DD was so annoyed with me at first...  She`d say no all the time.  I`d say to her, ``okay, but don`t forget that you`re wearing panties and you have to tell mom if you have to pee!``  And she`d say, ``Okay mom!``

DD only had 2 big accidents (like, peeing her pants 2x and pooping 2x) and that was all it took.  Otherwise, in the beginning she`d pee a couple of drops in her panties and then realize she had to pee and she`d tell me right away.  Never enough to have to change her, though!

  • On monday morning when DS woke up instead of taking off his diaper and putting a new one on I just put on underwear....and he pretty much figured it out on his own.  We had a potty for him before but hadnt actually tried potty training.  Because he feels wet when he goes he understands the connection.  Pull-ups are a waste of time for potty training IMO...they are just pull up diapers- we wear it for naps and bedtime but even DS calls them diapers, the feel like diapers and they cant feel being wet....we have tons of cute underwear - cars, toy story, elmo, etc that he loves and even though we change them a lot (not a lot of accidents but being a boy he makes a mess).....HTH.
