I have got to do something, and joining a gym is not in the cards. I'm also not really up for walking much in this hot summer weather, so I'm hoping a workout DVD will help me feel better both physically and mentally. I'm pretty out of shape, too -- I haven't exercised regularly in a couple of years, so I need something that won't kill me on the first go around.

Katie, the pre-cursor to P90X is called Power90. It's a 2-disc set, I can make you a copy of it if you're interested. It's NOTHING like P90X, pretty tame actually, probably more on the order of the 30 Day Shred but less annoying. My aunt and uncle (who have zero track record of exercising) are doing it now.
The website obviously sensationalizes it, but here it is - https://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/power90.do
I'm burning a copy for my sister this week, so let me know if you want one, too.

I'd start with the walking dvds. I've heard good things about them. A friend of mine has lost quite a bit of weight doing them. I would NOT recommend starting C25K right now, especially if you've never ran/haven't ran in forever. I went for a run last night and the heat nearly killed me--and that was at 7pm. If it would have been about 20 degrees cooler I could have run much longer (although I did finish what I was suppose to do). I also hate the Shred. Jillian is super annoying, and instead of feeling energized after her workouts I feel like I'm going to die. Good luck!!
I agree that the walking videos are probably the best bet if you've not exercised in a long, long time. She has some that are more than walking and incorporate intervals of kickboxing and/or jogging as well as hand weights to make them a little more challenging than just walking. I am able to do these all while pregnant so I think it would be a good, gentle way to ease yourself back into working out regularly. I doubt you want to start off with something that is going to kick your ass.
Also, The Firm series has some good strength training videos to help you incorporate some cardio and strength training at the same time. The total body time crunch work out comes to mind.
Lastly, The Biggest Loser DVDs (I have two - one for strength training, one for cardio) both have three levels of intensity for you to work up to. So you start off with something manageable for a few weeks and move up as your body requires more challenge.
