The options are seemingly endless, and I am being paralyzed by too many options. All I want is a nice, firm, comfy, and preferably lower priced mattress and box spring set for DS big boy bed.
We have the bed frame, and just lack the comfy part. :-)
AKA KnittyB*tch DS - December 2006 DD - December 2008
We bought DS's at Ashley Furniture, but there are ther options I would try such as Sam's Club or Weekend's Only Furniture if you have one of those. GL!

Mattress Discounters- we went to a few other places, but really they were all about the same. We ended up getting the firmest they carried in a twin and are super happy with it (especially since there have been many days DH and I are in bed reading with him)
we asked "is this the best price you can give me?" and they came down ~10% i think. GL
Edit: For what it's worth, we definately spent more than I thought we would but DH reminded me how long DS will have this bed and how much time he spends in there. I think we were somewhere around $500.
Sam's Club has them in sets for pretty cheap usually.
Art Van. I hate the place, the sales people make me itch. But they have good sales on mattresses. If you go look in the set up fake bedrooms, most of those mattresses are twin and way cheap.
Don't buy the cheapest one. We got one for $100 that I thought would be ok for a 30 pound person (we plan to get DD a new bed when she is 7). Not a great choice. Very uncomfortable. It is too "foamy" feeling.
