Success after IF

Strabismus (lazy eye)

I posted on the preemies board about this, but thought I should try here, too.

Anyone's LO have this issue? DS's right eye has been turning in for the past few months, and is getting worse. We have an appointment with the Eye Clinic at our Children's Hospital, but I was wondering what kind of treatment your LOs had.

The only first hand info I've gotten has been about on-set around 2 yrs old, and those kids have had surgery. I am really hoping to avoid that:(

Re: Strabismus (lazy eye)

  • We don't have it but my neice does. Her's is mild and really only shows when she is tired. When she was a baby, they took her to an Eye Clinic and they did a patch for a few weeks. They put a patch on the good eye which kind of forces the other eye to get stronger. She is 4 1/2 now and you only see it if she is really exhausted but not very often anymore. She never had surgery.

  • I wore a patch for awhile when I was little.  It corrected it, but even now when I am tired I can tell that I look w/ my stronger eye.  Overall, though it wasn't too bad.
  • I actually had lazy eye all my childhood though it switched eyes (weird I know).  A competent vision therapist can fix this.  Mine was fixed within months and now my vision prescription hasn't changed for years.  And I never had problems again.  I strongly recommend vision therapy.  If we have one licensed here in ND, you surely must have one in WI.  Good luck!
  • Thank you all for your replies:)

jcombs-I will look into that, thanks!

  • My 2 year old has it.   We noticed it when she was about 16-18 months old, just when she was really tired.  We met with a specialist who said it wasn't bad but to come back in 6 months.   At the follow up, they said it had gotten much worse.   Her treatment is glasses only - no patch or surgery.    She's been wearing them for about 2 months and it does seem to be helping.

  • Popping over from IF :)

My sister had a lazy eye as a child, it was pretty severe. She wore a patch on her strong eye for quite awhile and it completely fixed the problem. HTH and good luck!

  • I had it as a child.  I wore glasses for 8 years and it corrected itself, and my vision is now 20/20, with no crossed eyes.

  • I had it as a child (right eye too).  I don't know when it began but I had surgery when I was 2.  I don't think it was a big deal.  All I remember is when I woke up from surgery the nurse asked if I wanted some orange juice.  :)

  • Thanks for all the reassuring replies. I'll update when we meet with the dr. Hopefully all we have in our future are some patches:)
