Hey everyone. I'm not so new to the site but brand new to the adoption forum and I've been reading some posts and have been encouraged for the first time in a while. After trying for almost 3 years and going through IVF and such, my husband and I have decided to adopt. I have no idea what I'm doing either! I'm reading up on some agencies but I was wondering if anyone is from Florida or could give me some advice on how best to get connected to an agency. Any information would be useful. Emotionally, I'm wiped out after the last three years and would hate to go through all the hoops of adopting, just to hit another dead end. Thank you so much for any advice. I have no other means of support, friend wise since they all concieved naturally and I really hope to find a support group of sorts here Thank you so much.
Re: Any Floridians who could help?
Welcome to this portion of the board! I'm fairly certain there is at least one other that is from Florida.
A book that most of the posters recommend is "Adoption for Dummies". It will help you get started. I got mine on Ebay for .99 and it's in perfect condition.
Welcome! The book Adoption for Dummies is a great place to start educating yourself about the process. It gives you an overview of different types of adoption.
I live in Florida too. Are you interested in domestic adoption? Or international? We are adopting from Korea. There are no agencies in FL that have a Korea program, so we are using an agency out of Massachusetts. We did use a homestudy agency in Tampa though (we live in S. Florida).
We never considered domestic adoption, so I don't really have any advice or recommendations on that, but I'm sure there are others who can help you out.
Best wishes!
I sent you a PM.
Korean adoption is a bit different, in that Korea (I think) decides what agencies they work with and what state those agencies can place children in. It's complicated and I don't really understand it, but because of it we had to look out of state to find an agency that could place in our state. There was one agency that had a Korea program, but they stopped working in Florida one week after we sent them our application (figures, right?!) This is who we used for our home study. I bet they could give you a lot of info about Florida, different agencies, using a facilitator, foster adoption, etc.
Sounds like you are getting some good info!

Hi "neighbor", sorry about your IF journey, I know how hard it can be
I am very close to Tampa and we hired an Adoption Consultant based on recommendations from others. She happens to be local but works with couples in all states. A lot of her clients have adopted in 4 weeks (one is a friend that I met through Resolve). She only works with agencies / attorneys in states that have very good laws that protect the adoptive parents. We are registering with 5 agencies through out the state of Florida. And there are two we could register with in UT. We used a local Tampa agency for our Home Study and our first home visit is this Friday!
