Potty Training

stupid question re: potty training

I'm fairly sure DS isn't ready. But he's outgrowing his cloth diapers. So before I buy more in a bigger size, DH and I want to check that he can't hold his urine, that he's nto bothered by being wet. So my idea was to go diaper-free for a portion of hte day.

My stupid question, for those of you who have done this as part of PT, do you actually go naked, or in underpants? H's concern re: wearing underpants is that he'd feel like they're just another diaper and still go, rather than if he's totally naked, in which case he might hold it. I'm concerned about him totally not being ready (this is just an experiment after all), and having some pretty unpleasant accidents...

  • I know people do both, but we used underpants. The accidents really weren't that bad and she responded well to the change. DD definitely knew the difference between diapers and panties, but we didn't use cloth diapers. Good luck!

Can I ask what type of CD you use?  We PT DS at 17 months and he's CD.  We used GMD PF and Motherease Sandys with a stay dry liner.  When DS was about 12 months old we took out the fleece liners from our PF and the stay dry liner in our fitteds so he'd feel the wetness.  By 14 months he was telling us when he had to poop.  We waited a few more months to PT and he did it very easily.  Just a thought if you can do this with your CD.

When we did PT- we went 1 day without anything and the next day it was underwear and we reminded him that underwear is suppose to be dry.  Periodicaly throughout the day we'd do an underwear check and praise him for having dry underwear.

  • We mostly use BG pockets, with PFs at night. I was wondering about the wetness thing, as all BG have that stay-dry fleecy lining. He's outgrowing them anyway, and I've just bought a few second-hand Toddlerease (XL Sandys), so maybe that will make a difference? Though he is only just verbal enough to tell us about weeing and pooing.

I'm so impressed that your DS PT at 17 months! :) FWIW, I doubt DS is ready. (I think for example he only went an hour or so between weeing today. But I think I'll try with underwear tomorrow morning and see what happens. There's no harm in seeing what he thinks.

If it was me, I would presnap his Sandy's diapers and pull them on like underwear for him.  And if your going to use the BGs I would put the prefold on the outside.  It sounds silly but it will help him feel the wetness- do it for 1 month then switch to underwear.  I really think that's why DS potty trained "early".  And my DS isn't a talker- he would say "I poop" and now that he's PT he verberally tells us @ 75% of the time- the other times he either walks to the bathroom himself or he starts getting figgetty.  Don't be surprised if your LO is ready- best of luck!
